Windir (Warrior in English) was a folkloric black metal band from Sogndal, Norway. The band combined black metal with Norwegian folk music and mythology. The band was formed in 1994, but did not release an album until 1997. Windir was a project of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Terje "Valfar" Bakken.

Windir produced four albums in their almost ten years of existence, each more complex and successful than the last. The band broke up when Valfar died of hypothermia amidst the hills of Sogndal on January 14, 2004.

Many of Windir's lyrics are written in the local dialect Sognamål.

Very good Black Metal band, with Folkish melodies here and there. So far I have 1184 and Likferd, I'm listening to Likferd right now (for the first time), it seems it's going to be more straight forward than 1184. If you like intense Black Metal then definitely check them out. The production in both albums is pretty good, it isn't raw, it doesn't lose it's atmosphere though. One of the things that I really like about them is how they use the keyboard, it feels part of the band, and it's almost always there in some form. It isn't just at the beginning or the end of the song. Also, they use some clean vocals here and there, very epic.

I really need to listen to Windir again, I've not played the album I have in a long time. I've got Valfar, Ein Windir, and it's a brilliant album from start to finish.

That's the band that the other guys made after Windir disbanded, no? Windir is definitely one of my fav few BM bands that I like. They sound so "professional". I'll be getting their first two albums once I listen to the other CDs that I have. I have way too many new music.

One of the bands I need to start listening more. I was walking to uni last week and Likferd started playing on shuffle. I love the bridge on Despot to bits it's so damn epic.

The song before that one is even better IMO (Martyrium).

Windir has members that went into (or created, cant remember) Finntroll, Cor Scorpi, Vried, and Ensiferum.

I love this band so much, nothing can ever come close to their sound. Valfar was infact a true musician, I see him as the Chuck Schuldiner of Black Metal, simply for the reason that Windirs albums all had very good songs on them. Such atmosphere, such arcane feeling to them, can never get enough. I encourage all to give them a listen.
