	Log in to remove this sponsored message I was listening to a friend describe how a few people they were with were playing FE9. I couldn't fume at them (for the obvious reason that I wasn't there), so I came here to see if my frustration is justified, since I've always thought highly of the knowledge on this forum (or at least back when I frequented it when FE9 first came out). Their thought processes are: 1) "I won't use Rolf because he's too much of a hassle to level up without dying, and I like Shinon better." My thoughts: "Why? It's never bad to have too many Snipers. Snipers are excellent for the very reason that they can take front-line damage and kick out powerful long-range attacks. Sure, I prefer Shinon too, and I know he outweighs Rolf in everything but evasion; but that doesn't make Rolf useless! Shinon disappears until chapter 19, and Rolf is of great use during the early half of the game! Especially when you're facing the Ravens! 2) "Why waste my time with Volke and Sothe? They suck at defense." My thoughts: Okay, Sothe I can understand. I tried to use him, I really did, but he just doesn't cut it. But Volke? Really? He's one of the best units in the game. I'll admit he needs a little sheltering early on, but as soon as he hits assassin, he just pwns the stats. Plus the convenience of a thief/assassin cannot be denied. And Lethality is one of the best skills in the game! 3) "I'm not going to use Haar, because I got Jill earlier in the game, and he just can't catch up to the EXP she's already gained." My thoughts: It sounds to me like you're lazy. Haar is easily the most useful character in the game; there's many levels you can Solo with Haar; though it's such a waste of EXP for the others. I'll admit that Jill has nice stat growths; but the Caps don't lie; Haar is superior; and I've never had any trouble leveling everyone I need up through fighting and bonus EXP. Am I right? Or an I fuming over misconceived notions?

	1) One sniper is too many in FE9. They're easily the worst class and you're far better off using a different class that can contribute a lot more. Snipers in this game (with Rolf once he's caught up in levels) do have enough in defences to not die quickly when under attack. However, you don't want them taking attacks, because then you're not inflicting counterattack damage. Why have a sniper frontline when I can have a paladin/warrior/halberdier/swordmaster etc frontline who will take attacks just as well (if not better) AND counterattack anyone not using a ranged weapon? The arguement with Shinon is that he's useful at the beginning of the game where anyone not named Titania, Gatrie or Shinon are struggling to stay alive. His usefulness past that point is moot because he's already contributed more than Rolf does with no effort on the part of the player. Rolf never gets to a point where he's better than almost every other available character on the field AND he requires additional effort beyond the norm simply to not suck. 2) Erm, while I do think Volke is a useful unit, it certainly is not for his combat skills. Volke is a poor combat unit, barely ranking above the snipers. His stats look good on paper but you have to realize that Volke is stuck with knives, which are the worst weapons in the game due to ridiculously low might and complete lack of options. Equally, Lethality is a terrible ability, as it has one of the lowest chances of activation in the game (half crit, which means you only have about 12.5% chance maximum - which is max skill stat and using a stiletto - before enemy crit evasion is factored in). Why bother with that when you'll likely kill with a crit with most other combat units anyway? Volke is useful because he steals stuff and opens doors and chests. Sothe is for a similar reason, although his stealing abilities are more limited due to his low starting level and lack of promotion. 3) Jill is faster than Haar and will double attack tons of stuff Haar won't. The rest is completely moot because Haar's physical defensive wins are minor and Jill's offensive is ridiculously better, especially as by the time Haar joins Jill has access to silver lances. Haar still has to increase one of his weapon ranks to get silvers. "Jill joins first" is a completely valid viewpoint in this case, because Jill is good and it's entirely logical that she will see a lot of use and thus gain levels well. Haar doesn't bring anything to the table worth noting that Jill isn't already doing just as well or better so switching Jill out for Haar would be purely for personal preference. Caps are irrelevant because Haar never hits any of them. Like, with Str, Skl, Spd and Def he would have to gain a stat point every single level up in those areas to hit the caps. Not happening - especially with speed where he has a fairly low 35% growth. Sure, Haar is usable. So is Bastian, Lucia, Ulki etc. Doesn't make them good. ------------------- Fire Emblem Awakening - You Want It.

	Wow really okay 1 pretty sure snipers r way useful deadeye is an amazing. Ability and pretty sure rolf for me hits a critical about 1 out of every 5 attacks and always hits twice both of their evasions and defense is amazing and pretty sure there ability to hit three squares aways takes care of mages / sages and many other units before they r a problem oh and as long as u have a decent strategy they r never even in harms way and the completely pwn the enemy units before they have a chance to even touch your front lines... I would pit my units and team against yours any day and I assure you my snipers would pwn your team while my front lines make them look foolish and finish off what's left...

	Deadeye's ability to knock the enemy asleep would be useful only if it worked more than 15% of the time max. Unfortunately it doesn't, which makes it horribly unreliable. I'd rather give the occult skill scrolls to units with more useful talents. Snipers do critical more, but again relying on that is pretty unreliable and the increased damage you're doing on player phase is countered by not doing any damage whatsoever on enemy phase. Plus Rolf doesn't even have that for about half his play time. Sure they hit twice. So do most of the other units in the game. Evasion and defences are moot because it is detremental to allow them to be attacked. Hitting three spaces away requires using the longbow. You know, that bow with terrible might? Snipers have 2 range most of the time. It would be very hard to defeat every enemy with them before they reached your frontline units. Not that you need to, as frontline units like Titania, Jill, Boyd etc are designed to soak up hits AND counterattack for massive damage, destroying the enemy army much faster. 	You put way to much on might I take it bc I can take just about anyone out with rolf in one turn and dead eye also insures the hit and doubles the chance to hit for critical which happens quite frequently and even if he doesn't hit critical still defeats the enemy no problem and that's even with the long bow and if you can hit from a distance and allow your front lines to march further and faster without any danger of taking damage or even getting hit period how is that inefficient? And titiana is a horrible unit she is good maybe for three chapters but by then she is useless bc I build up boyd ike and oscar and leave her sitting useless as she would be in the end. Why waste xp and time on her when in the end she is so weak that seems pointless. I have a fast paced and strong offensive that works very well I rarely even get touched by the enemy bc they can't hit them before bein killed and if they do get close they rarely actually connect and yes it requires the long bow or double bow but even with those low might bows my snipers kill the target critical or not and if they dont which rarely happens the front lines hit them maybe once and they don't even get to counter in the battle its more than effective its efficient and deadly... you can't hit what you can't get close to its all about the strategy...

As for hit that basically means Rolf goes from hitting everything in the game to hitting everything in the game. lol, the last thing a sniper needs is more hit. The majority of enemy units will not be one rounded, especially not from a pathetic longbow. You're talking about a 8 damage difference per hit between that and silvers. If Rolf can one round without criticals with a long bow against nonfliers and nonspellcasters then that means almost every single combat unit in the game can one round with anything. Might as well give handaxes and the like to other units. I might lose 3 range, but I still get 2 range AND counterattack capability. quote jmorrass if you can hit from a distance and allow your front lines to march further and faster without any danger of taking damage or even getting hit period how is that inefficient Generally, the difference is between having a unit on the field that can range attack but is a hindrance on enemy phase or having a direct combat unit that is useful on both phases. The direct combat unit can also equip a range 1-2 weapon if I want to smash on certain enemies from a distance to reduce the damage my army is taking. Snipers don't have the option of switching to a range 1 weapon. One of these is more useful than the other. I trust you can figure out which one. Even if I do want a more dedicated range attacker, I have superior options. Astrid can switch between bows and whatever weapon is chosen at promotion and has all the awesome benefits of mounted classes. Soren, Ilyana and Tormod use magic to pound on the terrible resistances of the enemies for a lot of damage unaided by crits and get utility as secondary healers. Titania is only margainally weaker than the top tier units like Oscar. Seriously, her losses are minor. As a counterbalance she requires far less investment than any other unit. 	It's funny really, because my friend on msn just tried arguing Rolf wasn't worse then Shinon. I just sort of laughed at him and dismissed it as a bad joke, but I think he was serious. 	True that. I think one of the factors that also help her is that the second movement. Its good on its own, but its essential for bow users. Still, I think its worth using Shinon and Rolf for the sake of the FE10 data transfer, since Snipers are rumored to be a lot more useful in that game. I actually came up with an interesting idea between the time I first read your post and when I was up and about to make FE10 snipers even more useful. Simply use a regular bow to attack with before moving other units then switch them a crossbow using the trade command. Just a thought.

I could have probably worded that better. However, it is also true that having an ill will toward somebody else does not have any direct impact on how you consciously (though perhaps unconsciously) treat a person. I'm not saying that you can't be a douche and not be intelligent. I'm just saying that aggression is not synonymous to intelligence (what you seemed to be implying in the post which I quoted.) and that you will almost always have a higher intellectual capacity by not being aggressive. In addition, Being a douche also has no direct connections to aggression, either. There are some really nice people that are aggressive because they hate the world and all the lies they believe to be in the mainstream and what have you. There are also douches out there that are not aggressive, but rather, they merely display assertive (and there is a difference) behavior whenever possible and not slowing down for other people's issues. Whether they have good reasons for doing so or not is a different issue altogether. Douche or not, cause or no cause, people who lack aggression are far more likely to have successful relationships, keep jobs, have a higher self esteem amongst many other things. The ability to get these things in the easiest way possible is based on a realm of intelligence in itself, therefore proving that lacking aggression is indeed a powerful component to one's intellectual capacities. 	You have no concept of the underlying situation between me and my friend. We've had multiple debates that I would consider intelligent and even heated. The fact that he brought up one that's hardly comparable was more then enough for me to scoff.
