New York City

Hello all!

I'm heading to NYC at some point over summer. Apart from the usual tourist destinations, is there anything else you guys can throw out to me. I'm talking anything at all. Stuff that might not be mentioned in the tourist books or only be mentioned in a half a page but is still equally as cool.

Obviously I've looked into stuff, but nothing quite beats recommendations from locals or others who have travelled there.

Once again, anything at all goes ^^;

Born and raised in NYC here.

However, the term New York City is kind of vague. There's five boroughs, each with their own specific pros and cons. I'm guessing you mean you're visiting Manhattan, which is a lovely place. There's also Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. And while Long Island isn't technically part of NYC, it is still very much connected with the rest of the boroughs.

I'm sure your tourist books covered most of the must-see spots in Manhattan, such as Times Square, Central Park, Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty, American Mueseum of Natural History, etc.

Manhattan contains most of the tourist spots. As for the other boroughs, there's really not much to see in the Bronx, except for Yankee Stadium, but that's only if your into Baseball. Same with Queens and Citi Field.

Off the top of my head:

Best Pizza = L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn.
Best Deli = John's Deli in Brooklyn, or Carnegie Deli in Manhattan.
Best Beaches = Anywhere in Long Island, specifically by the Hamptons.
Best Aquarium = New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

new york city is a heart of America and its so beautiful and awesome city of america. i really enjoying in summer to that city and i love this city.

I was about to ask the same question. I'm going to New York for New Years Eve and will be doing the whole times square thing. I arrive on the 28th of December and depart on the 1st of Jan. I'll be in Manhattan the entire time. Here is a list of things I want to do. Suggestions/Feedback is appreciated.

• Empire State Building
• Statue of Liberty
• Central Park
• Chinatown and Little Italy
• Museum of Natural History
• Phantom of the Opera
• Times Square to bring in the new year.

We have four days to do it all, what else should we do?

Any any suggestions on what not to do?

Is there any really dangerous places in Manhattan?

Go down into the subway tunnels (into the lower levels).
If you come back, let us know if people actually live down there

But seriously, check out the common sights and stay away from alleys. I can't exactly say stay away from people who look well...weird...it's NYC, a lot of people are eccentric.

I know someone who was mugged down an alley, so I have every intention of staying in crowded, lit places.

How late are the shops open? And are the streets crowded at midnight?

To your first question, I believe most shops are open late into the night (I know one that doesn't close, but the name is escaping my mind).
Yes, the streets are still crowded at midnight, but there aren't nearly as many people as midday.

Edit: Do not keep your wallet in your back pocket.

Why do you want to go to all the tourist-saturated areas for? If you want to experience real New York life, then go to the outer boroughs where things aren't modeled to make out of towners smile. If that list is what you'll be doing, then you may as well choose another city to visit. Not any different than Philly's Little Ialy, or Chicago's Grant Park.
