Shoot-Em-Up!

So what were your experiences with classic addictive shoot-em-ups from the Nintendo age? I speak of games like this and other titles like "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" where your main goals were to shoot the snot out of anything that moved, rescue survivors and/or get to the goal on time. This includes arcade games as well. I used to love nothing better than to head down to the pizza shop and play Gauntlet or Forgotten Realms for hours with at least one friend. How did they manage to keep us occupied for so long despite the repetitiveness? DISCUSS!

re: Shoot-Em-Up!

Smash TV was fun. The 'out of this world' reality TV show reminded me of the TV segments that were inserted into Robocop. Plus, it had the groovy multidirectional firing system+strafing. Something that wouldn't really hit games in a big way till much later.
