I've heard stuff. Here it goes:
Dust Hill Zone was originally going to be a level, but sadly, it didn't make it, but, there might have been made small bit of this level. Crocobot might NOT be related into this level.
Dust Hill Zone was scrapped in early development stage, and, there is no evidence that such level ever existed, only one magazine shot, which turned out to be a mock-up.Hidden Palace Zone must be second most popular discussion of beta Sonic 2, if not the first. Well, it has been proven, that Hidden Palace Zone WAS made, and the original purpose was to Sonic go here with all the seven Chaos Emeralds, and get the power to transform into Super Sonic. Of course, this idea was scrapped later, since it would be scaled into "SUPER SAIYAN TRANSFORMATION - ONLY TAKES ONE HOUR OF SCREAMING TO FINISH" and remember, there is no Knuckles, no matter how deep you dig in game's coding. There is no Master Emerald.
Hidden Palace Zone is almost fully finished in my vision, but, it was however, scrapped along with the Super Sonic idea (which came later on) into SEGA's trashcan. There was also mock-up(s?) of this zone, which were all lame.Wood Zone is interesting, i have played it, and noticed, that it HAD some kind of Star Wars reference. If i could remember those little bears names... It can be clearly seen from Act 2 and unfinished materials that SEGA didn't have time to make this. Cut out. And yes, i DO think that this is Metropolis Zone's past or good future. Since there WAS time traveling stuff.
Cut off from final release because of space and time constraints. None of magazine pictures are mock-ups. Genocide City Zone was canned at very early stage of development, if there was even bit of it made. One of zone artists decided to put time on Metropolis Zone Act 3 rather than it. The name isn't the reason, SEGA wouldn't pick up random, inappropriate names for their zones and other stuff. There is no flaming skeleton or skull, since there is no evidence about it. Nor there is any evidence of this level, expect a mock-up. Althrough, looking from concepts, it was going to be something like Scrap Brain, hence the name "Genocide" Just because it has "Genocide" on it, it doesn't mean that it's hell with skeletons hanging from chains, bodybags, or anything that related. Jesus, why everyone is mistaking this name? Yes, i do know that genocide means systematic killing of people/group/ethnics, but it isn't Adolf Hitler-esque. SEGA does have brains to know what children want, and they would NEVER put level with gore, violence, explosions and other inappropriate things for this children-oriented game. Scrap Brain Zone is pretty relative to this level, due of it's name, and it's theme. But, i have came in conclusion, that this zone wasn't hellish level. I don't know about the time travel element is related to this, but i doubt so.
Finally, i'd like to say, that this zone was scrapped at very early stage of development, due of time not to do it, or because of Metropolis. But, keep in mind, that EVERY SINGLE VIDEO AND SCREENSHOT OF THIS LEVEL is a HOAX. Expect those in hacks, but they are just fanmade stuff. Sonic 2 Delta portraits it as rather calm-looking recolour of Chemical Plant, with red water, (blood?) but with the final boss music, when Sonic 2 Extended comes with the popular "OH MY GOD IT'S A HELL, GET SONIC QUICKLY OUT OF HERE!And finally, the largely unheard Winter Level:
Winter Level was similar to Dust Hill Zone, since it spared with this level some graphics, but they were just edited. I'll bid my bets that those evergreen trees from Hill Top were used in this level, but they were snowish. Only small part of graphics and level design were made, until this one was scrapped too. Too bad.
This was cancelled also, and only small amount of graphics were made, and level design. In Sonic 2 Delta, this level can be played too. It has Hill Top's background, but it's more winter-looking. No screenshot evidence about this, but it's made in hacks, i think. That's my review to all these lost levels of Sonic 2.
