In case you didn't know, Sega canceled an Obsidian developed Aliens RPG in 2009 -- about three years into development. With the poor reception that Aliens: Colonial Marines received, many gamers may be wondering what could have been if Sega had allowed Obsidian to release their RPG instead of shifting the license to Gearbox. An animation reel released by artist Danny Garnett gives us a glimpse.
While it's certainly not enough to visualize exactly what sort of game Obsidian was creating, it's enough to know that it would probably have been worth playing. Imagine a mixture of either Knights of the Old Republic or XCOM: Enemy Unknown in the Aliens universe. The possibilities are jarring.
Of course, instead of this Aliens RPG Obsidian is now working on South Park: The Stick of Truth, an unannounced Wheel of Time title and Project Eternity. Meanwhile, the Aliens license will be a bit of a joke for the rest of the year, while pulling in a disturbing amount of profits. I guess everyone wins? Even Danny Garnett finally gets to share his work with the world.
