3D Realms looks to float adrift as an industry pariah no longer after handing the reins to Duke Nukem Forever to Gearbox Software, as Denmark-based SDN Invest is confirmed to have acquired the studio originally behind the storied (and eventually troubled) franchise. The investment firm's founder Mike Nielsen will also become CEO of 3D Realms.
SDN Invest is also part-owner of Interceptor Entertainment, which recently made headlines for teasing a new Duke Nukem title of their own with 3D Realms' blessings called Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction. However, this landed both companies in legal hot water from Gearbox last week, since it now holds the future publishing rights for the franchise.
Interceptor remains upbeat about the 3D Realms acquisition in spite of this, with CEO Frederik Schreiber calling it "a huge step" for the company.
