Kadokawa Games is mostly known as a game and manga publisher, but it appears they're further exploring game development with the announcement of Natural Doctrine. Kadokawa most recently contributed to the development of Earth Seeker, a Wii RPG that was never localized for the states. However, with the SRPG Natural Doctrine coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Vita they may be about to make a splash.
Natural Doctrine's trailer paints a very dark atmosphere, mixing black and white filters with grimy, dark and brown environments that are typically associated with "mature" first person shooters. On top of that there's a mixture of unique races of creates, high fantasy sword fighting and then the gunpowder era of battle as well. Battle minotaurs, robots, and rock elementals in crumbling buildings set on a grid. Hngh, I'm already won over.
I guess all that's left to say is that hopefully we'll hear more about Natural Doctrine at the Tokyo Game Show in a couple of weeks. Whenever there's mention of a Japanese SRPG it's impossible not to get all nostalgic about Final Fantasy Tactics and hype the game up. Let's all take a deep breath and just hope for a great game.
