Rent Star Fox Assault Early
|
quote Planet GameCube
Try before you buy.
Blockbuster, the largest rental chain in North America, has announced on its website that Nintendo's Star Fox Assault will be available for rent beginning Feb. 1st, two full weeks before the game is set to be released in retail stores. Company-owned Blockbuster stores recently adopted a new "no late fees" policy in which you can rent a movie or game and keep it indefinitely; after a few weeks, the remainder of its value is automatically charged to your credit card. This means that fans may be able to find brand new (not yet rented) copies of Star Fox Assault on Tuesday and effectively buy it two weeks early by simply not returning it to the store.
Rival chain Hollywood Video is also participating in the early rental promotion, according to a Nintendo email newsletter. [Link]
Sounds good to me.

At the recent Game Developer's Conference which, thus far, has only revealed a disappointingly stupid Sonic game, Satoru Iwata, 'King' of Nintendo, talked about the future of the Revolution and offered a [brand new Zelda Trailer]. Both of which made my shiver in ecstacy:

quoteGDC 2005: Iwata Keynote Details: Revolution Comes Together Nintendo partners with IBM and ATI for a next-gen console that will be both Wi-Fi and backward compatible. Full story. by Matt Casamassina
March 10, 2005 - Nintendo president Satoru Iwata delivered his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Thursday. The company head outlined the publisher's philosophies in regard to its next-generation console, which is codenamed Revolution. Iwata once more reiterated that while cutting edge graphics and audio are to be expected, Nintendo hopes to deliver a new gaming dynamic that will enhance the way players enjoy its software.
However, Iwata also announced Nintendo's two major hardware partners for Revolution, both previously rumored to be working on the console and both industry stand-outs. IBM is deep in development with the CPU that will provide the processing power of the machine. The chip is codenamed "Broadway," according to Nintendo. Meanwhile, ATI, which developed the GameCube's graphics chip, is underway with GPU for Revolution. The chip is codenamed "Hollywood," according to Nintendo.
Iwata explained the reasoning behind each codename. The CPU is called Broadway because, according to the executive, "Broadway is the capital of movie entertainment." Meanwhile, Iwata said that the GPU's name stems from the fact that "Hollywood is the capital of movie entertainment." He added: "With Revolution, we are determined to create the new capital of interactive entertainment."
"We're excited to be developing the graphics chip set for Revolution, which continues our longstanding relationship with Nintendo," explained Dave Orton, ATI Technologies' president and chief executive officer. "As the leading graphics provider, ATI is committed to delivering exceptional visual performance that enables consumers to interact with new and visually compelling digital worlds. ATI is proud to support Nintendo's innovative contributions to gaming." Iwata also announced that Revolution would feature backward compatibility with GameCube, which means that consumers will be able to play GCN software on the next console.
In addition, the Nintendo president said that Revolution would be Wi-Fi compatible out of the box. The revelation goes hand-in-hand with the company's newly announced DS online network, which enables owners of the handheld to connect to the Internet wirelessly and play against each other.
The publisher's leader reassured attendees that Nintendo would be counting on third parties to support Revolution. "We will be expanding our development reach," he stated. "Some of these [future] games will come from larger internal development teams. Some from the kinds of relationships we've formed with third parties over the years."
He indicated that Revolution, like GameCube, would be designed to appeal to development studios regardless of how fundamentally changed the console itself might prove to be. "Even though the game experience will be far different on Revolution, developing for it will be quite familiar," he said.
Finally, Iwata introduced a brand new trailer for the anticipated GameCube title The Legend of Zelda. Naturally, onlookers were blown away.
"This is Nintendo's plan: make our existing game world better," Iwata said. "For us, this is a passion. This is a mission of adventure," Iwata explained.
The Nintendo head promised more details on Revolution and the DS wireless network at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005, which kicks off this May in Los Angeles. Needless to say, backwards compatability means that the controllers are reusable or the new ones aren't so freakish after all. Plus WiFi! This is indeed comforting news given the lack of news lately and bad rumors. If they're punching out games like that and their systems can let me play all my old games, they win!

Since the Revolution will be backwards compatible does this mean that nintendo will again be using mini-discs?

It could go either way. It's possible to run regular-sized disks alongside normal disks (I have a GC-disk sized CD that runs perfectly in my computer, and the Panasonic Q played GC games and DVDs), but they may choose to go with two mediums that are the same size.
I wouldn't place any bets either way at the moment. But the GC's 4 GB (ish, I think) disks are looking somewhat tiny spacewise compared to sony's blu-ray disks and microsofts special DVDs.

So why should it be revolutionary ? And where are the Streetfighter games on Nintendo ??, will it appear on gamecube or revolution ? Cause there is coming an streetfigher anniversary edition: Streetfighter 2 Hyper and Streetfighter 3 Third Strike on the x-box and playstation 2. Nintendo had these games first. It is real weird if it doesn´t appear on Nintendo.

Actually according to an old EGM I have it says that the GC disk hold 1.5 GB. I believe most games get close to filling up the space, so it would really be a good idea to come out with a bigger disk for the revolution, because the games most likely have better graphics which will take up more space.

But is it possible to have the revolution games a normal cd and still play gamecube games? I kinda hope so. Sure the mini discs were neat but they can't hold near the amount a standard cd can

Nintendo sees Net Income Double!
|
quoteNews: Nintendo Sees Net Income Double Posted by Ash - Apr 6th 2005 14:04
For the fiscal year ending March 31st Nintendo have reported that their full-year net income has more than doubled from the previous year.
Nintendo have reported that their net income was 82 billion yen, compared to 33.2 billion yen from the previous year. This exceeds Nintendo's previous forecast of a 70 billion yen profit.
Nintendo also plans to pay an annual dividend of 270 yen. This will be a record high, and the first increase for the company since 2001. Compare this to last year's 140 yen a share and you can see how things are looking up for Nintendo.
Finally, Nintendo also saw a 3.6 percent growth in their shares on the Osaka Securities Exchange. It seems that Nintendo are having a good time financially, but it is probably in large due to the DS. It will be interesting to see how things compare next year.

Three Possible Zelda's?
|
quoteNews: Zelda To Come In Three Versions Posted by Ash - Apr 5th 2005 21:55
The upcoming title The Legend of Zelda is due to be released in three versions, but only two are likely to be released (for whatever reason) according to Spong.
According to Spong Nintendo intend to release three versions of the upcoming The Legend of Zelda title but apparently only two versions of the game will be released. Which begs the questions, why make three?
However Nintendo do intend to offer fans a treat if they pre-order The Legend of Zelda in the form of a bonus disc. While contents of said disc have not been discussed Nintendo did state “Of course there will be a bonus with Zelda. Nintendo understands its fans and knows what they want from a franchise this beloved and brilliant.”. The contents of the bonus disc will apparently be announced "shortly", which more than likely means at E3. cube-europe.com Somebody already posted this over at the TLOZ forum but he was met with nothing but bashing and mockery. Anyway, I got it from what I consider to be a reliable source. It's just a rumour right now, but hell everything is a rumour to begin with. I find it real interesting actually. I can see three versions being made. Three different adventures maybe? Who knows. Nintendo is sitting on a Gold Mine with this game... why not take advantage of that?
