I heard this on the radio last night.

Michael De Vere, the Brisbane centre, wasnt approached by Huddersfield concerning his signing. Wakefield, Wigan and Hull all approached De Vere asking him to move to SL but he rejected all three.

Then De Vere himself rang Jon Sharp, the Huddersfield head coach, and said he would be interested in signing for them. Of course Sharp bit his hand off, and its arguably the biggest signing in Huddersfield's recent history.

Warrington Wolves have signed Great Britain and former St Helens star centre Martin Gleeson on a four year deal.

Wigan born Gleeson, who was brought up in Brisbane will join his younger brother Mark, a hooker for the club in strengthening the squad for next season.

Gleeson shot to prominence at St Helens in 2002 following his move from Huddersfield at the end of 2001 when they were relegated.

He went on to score 15 tries in 33 appearances in his first season and was named in the Tetley's Super League Dream Team of that year.

In 2003 a leg operation restricted Gleeson to 21 Super League appearnces, but he recovered in time for the Ashes Series in November.

This season he has scored 3 tries in 8 Super League gamess and has scored in the Challenge Cup Final at the Millenium Stadium.

His International sucess includes the England Under 21's tour of South Africa in 2001, scoring in the 2nd test. In 2002 after his move to Saints he made his Great Britain debut in July in Australia and went on to play in all 3 tests against New Zealand.

Head Coach Paul Cullen commented on his latest signing, "The capture of Martin Gleeson is absolutely sensational we have acquired the services of another world class three-quarter in addition to the Kiwi international Henry Fa'afili.

"The most striking characteristic in our dealings so far with Martin are his ambitions to play for Great Britain and to continue to win trophies."

Whilst on the coaching subject, John kear has been named as the successor to Shaun McRae at Hull, and will take over at the end of the season when McRae moves to South Sydney

Hull have confirmed John Kear will take over as coach from Shaun McRae who is leaving to work in Australia's NRL.
Kear, McRae's assistant until the end of the season, has signed a two-year deal and has an option for a third.

"This post presents a magnificent opportunity for myself in which Shaun McRae has laid the foundations for success at this club," said Kear.

"I've been presented with the chance to finish the job off by taking Hull FC to join the elite on a regular basis."

Fitness conditioner Billy Mallinson and physio Simon Pope have signed new contracts - Mallinson has signed for two years with a third year option and Pope has signed a three year deal.

Under 21s coach Andy Last will be given an extended role and there will be an assistant coach appointed in the next couple of weeks, said Kear.
