Massive Entertainment put together a little video for GDC this year to show developers a little of what building Tom Clancy's The Division looks like using their new Snowdrop engine. That is to say, they demo some of the engine tools that are actively being used in the development of Ubisoft's upcoming multiplayer online shooter. While there's a lot of lingo thrown around, it's easy to appreciate what Massive has going on with Snowdrop.
This isn't the first time Massive and Ubisoft have showcased their Snowdrop technology in video form. The developer and publisher are obviously very pleased with what they've built. Considering how Ubisoft has had to downgrade some of Watch Dogs visuals in recent months, maybe it would have been better to have built it on Snowdrop instead of Havok. Then again, until The Division is released it's hard to tell if the engine can really deliver the experience it's promising
The tech showcases sure do look pretty though.
Tom Clancy's The Division's release window is currently scheduled for Q4 2014 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. After all the Watch Dogs delays, however, it'll be a miracle of The Division isn't pushed back as well. Ubisoft doesn't like having its own games compete against each other.
