What is Panopticon? Even with this announcement trailer, the answer toi that question isn't entirely clear. We have to assume it's game of some sort considering it's coming from Sony Japan Studio, but even in terms of crazy Japanese trailers this one's gone full anime. It looks like we've got a cast of robotic teenagers who are gathered against their will to battle bigger, dragon robots. And one of them is pregnant. And it's a post-apocalyptic future in London. What?
The trailer sprouted out of a Sony countdown site, which in true ridiculous fashion was not counting down, but instead counting upwards to 1,000,000 years. When the clock struck a million, this trailer popped up along with another teaser -- a date. On May 21, which is coincidentally when the next Xbox will be revealed, we'll learn more about Panopticon.
Panopticon means: "A circular prison with cells arranged around a central well, from which prisoners could at all times be observed." Interesting premise for an anime about robots fighting each other, but what sort of game can we expect? And what console/handheld is it coming to? Just a guess, but I'd say Vita, or perhaps PS3, but it probably wouldn't be a terrible PS4 launch title either. Stay tuned.
Oh, it's also worth mentioning this is a Japan-focused teaser trailer. There's no North American or European version. While there's no spoken word, no Japanese or English, it's hard to say if this is even anything Sony would want to bring overseas at this point.
