When it comes to The Sims, there is nothing more important than the character creation system. Everything that comes after character creation? Doesn't matter. If the character creation isn't a success then the game itself won't hold any purpose. The events want feel compelling. That's why it's such a relief to see that The Sims 4's character creation seems to be quite solid. Don't mess this up Maxis!
In the latest Sims 4 trailer we see a developer running us through the creation of two different characters. A sexy lady (seriously, guys?) and an eccentric looking gentleman. Naturally, the dev uses the female to show off how detailed the creation system can get with regards to the facial area, using a fancy new dynamic click and pull system rather than sliders. The lady also gets to show off clothing, make-up and accessories. What does the guy get to show off? Wrinkles and tattoos. Ugh. Play to your audience, I guess.
Despite the spin that's being put on for the game's target audience, it's rather clear that it's actually a rather robust system. When each of the Sims based on different developers are shown the accuracy is, while not exact, still impressive. People of different body types and levels of stereotypical attractiveness are all shown. It's exactly what I wanted to see in a Sims game, because I get enough perfect looking people in all my other video games, thank you very much. Give me some real people.
Next, hopefully, Maxis will show us how we can torture, err, build entire lives for our crazy Sims. This is going to be great.
The Sims 4 is planned for release on PC in fall of 2014. Expect more information going into E3 next month and beyond.
