Call of Duty: Ghosts is now officially official, as Activision has sent out the game's first teaser trailer. Developed by Infinity Ward, there's not an inch of gameplay to be found in the teaser, but there is a launch date -- November 5, 2013. Expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and also next-gen consoles. Speaking of which, the teaser also says we'll, "see it live," at Microsoft's next-gen Xbox reveal on May 21.
Here's Activision's CEO Eric Hirshberg on what to expect from Call of Duty: Ghosts:
"Infinity Ward set the gold standard for first-person action for a generation, and they're going to do it again with Call of Duty: Ghosts. Ghosts delivers an all-new story, all-new characters, an all-new Call of Duty world, all powered by a next generation Call of Duty engine, which is a leap forward for the franchise. Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world's greatest fans."
As for the content of the teaser trailer itself, well, it's pretty typical macho nonsense. Something about a bunch of bros and the reason they wear masks. "There are those who wear masks to hide, and those who wear masks to show us what they stand for." Mostly it's just a number of live-action actors dressed up as warriors from across time. The teaser closes with the shadowy figures of a number of soldiers as one lights a flare and pulls down a mask with the "Ghost skull" painted on it.
As we've seen over the past week of rumors and teaser sites, the announcement of Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn't come as any sort of surprise. What is a surprise is that Infinity Ward isn't developing Modern Warfare 4. Here's Mark Rubin, Executive Producer at Infinity Ward, on the shift in direction:
"Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels. We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community."
Make of it what you will, Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming. Look forward to it on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on November 5, and then on next-gen consoles later.
