Not getting chkdsk to run is a pretty common problem. It's probably got to do with a dirty volume on your HDD, which also causes the error about the deframenter.
What you want to do is see if the volume is dirty, by going to Start>Run and type "cmd" (or on older windows versions, "command.com") both without the "" marks. Now you'll get a DOS screen to pop-up, type, again without those "" marks: "fsutil dirty query C:" C: being the the drive you want to check (so if you have more, check all drives) Now if it comes out dirty, allow it to clean up, and then use the following: "chkdsk c: /f /x" and see if it works. If, however all your volumes turn out to be clean, we'll see if it's something else. Also, it is worth mentioning that, when using the command chkdsk, it is assumed you have administration rights on your PC. So if you have a limited account, you can't use it. See if you are an Administrator by going to Start>Run and type: "control userpasswords2" ------------------- quote Jesus ![]()

I entered fsutil dirty query C:. It just says that C:/ is dirty, and it isnt cleaning anything. Thanks, I really appreciate all the help I can get.

If you are sure that the volume is not dirty, check if the services for the disk defragmenter are set to 'automatic'. I don't recall what the exact services are, but I think DCOM process launcher and Event log, apart from the defrag service itself, are necessary to be able to run the windows defragmenter. (You should confirm this info though.). Type 'services.msc' in the run box to bring up the services list.
You can also download the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009 from their website and defrag using it. It's exactly like the full payware version except that it's limited to one month of usage. I use the full version of Diskeeper and it's awesome

I'm having the same problem, though I can defrag through TuneUp Utilities 2009. could it be that TuneUp Utilities is blocking my default defragmenter?

if you have another defrag utility other than the built in windows defrag, it will generally deny access to that defrag and use the other one. for example, my computer had diskeeper on it. i uninstalled it incorrectly and didnt remove some of the registry files that redirect to diskeeper, so i couldnt defrag my computer at all. so if you have another defrag utility, use that one or remove it to use the built it one...although most if not all defrag utilities are better than the built in one.
