i want to know all about linux, any useful info like were i can get and if it will play new games like halo, does it have directx9 support?

Most linux builds are free.

Linux

-> it's stable
-> it's safe from Windows-specific viruses
-> it's very cheap or free
-> it confers instant uber-133t status on the user

The cons may be:

-> major software packages built for Win/Mac won't run under Linux (unless using wine)
-> there are *lots* of different versions of Linux, and it is difficult to know which one to choose.
-> some versions may not be as straightforward to install as Windows
-> If used to Windows it may be difficult to use



If anyone is intrested in Linux but dare not remove windows to try it you could try knoppix. I myself have not used it but I hear it is good.

You could still try a CD Distro or if you have some free room on your hard drive backup, partition, install and dual boot getting the best of both worlds.

You don't need a seperate HD, only a seperate partition. Redhat/Fedora both have partitioning tools built-in (in the setup) but they can't shrink partitions. Naturally, your Windows partition takes up 100% of your hard drive with it's partition, leaving no free space for a second partition. You'll need Partition Magic (or a free partition manager, but PM is more stable). Before running any partition manager, I would recommend cloning your harddrive with Norton Ghost (just in case). You'll need about 10gb for most flavors of linux. If you just want to learn Linux, install Gentoo (or Slackware). Trust me, you'll learn more about Linux than you ever wanted to know. Oh yeah, don't worry about overwriting your Windows MBR, GRUB boots Windows just fine.

As for Linux not having as many games, it can run 90% of the big games on the market with WineX, like DR said. As for software, free GNU software is endless. There's no need to worry about games or software. Oh yeah, don't try to install Linux without first verifying your hardware. Linux doesn't work with all architectures.

Don't forget that Linux runs great on slow machines; provided you don't have every single aftermarket app running on it. I have a 486 with Red Hat loaded; Windows just can't compare when it comes to system requirements.

You don't have to be an advanced user to use Linux really. I installed it on my moms box ages ago and to put it in simple terms she is computer-stupid. But she can get her email surf the web and do everything else she needs to with out any trouble. I believe she could even install most modern distros as its just a matter of following simple instructions some simpler then others.
