Windows VS Mac - Differences? |
|
Ok, so I recently started working at a place where I have to work on a Mac computer. Before I've always worked with Windows. I asked why they're using Mac computers, they said Mac works better for graphical stuff (ok?).
Now, I'm not a Windows fanboy, it's just what I've always been using. I've heard people say Windows sucks and Mac is more original and stuff, but to be honest, I don't see the difference really. I'm working mainly with 2 programs, and 1 of those is Photoshop, which I also have on my own computer. But... I don't see the difference between my Photoshop, and the Photoshop on the Mac (ignoring the few differences in using shortcuts). Then how does that make the Mac better than Windows? ------------------- Don't mess with THE Battlers!!

apparently macs are better suited to digital media applications, but personally, i dont think paying an extra grand for a mac is worth it. for the ame money, you can build a computer that will rape a mac to death using windows.

It's mainly when you are doing heavy video editing and 3d rendering when you are going to notice the difference. A friend of mine even uses all his pc power to render 3d images to process it on his Mac.
Also you can't compare Windows to a Mac, because Windows in the Operating System (OS), Mac is a computer It's Personal Computer (PC) vs. Macintosh (Mac) and Windows (OS) vs. Mac OS X Snow Leopard (OS) ------------------- ![]()

To above, well yeah, that's kinda what I meant, but not too familiar with all the official names.=S
Ok, so it only really makes a difference with the big stuff. Then I just wonder why so some people are so anti-Windows or anti-Mac OS X (I said it right there, right?=P) only because it look a bit different. ------------------- Don't mess with THE Battlers!!

Well, there are arguments for both sides really.
People who are anti-Mac proclaim that they're overpriced and that a PC with Windows runs nearly everything, because over 90% of all software is still written exclusively for Windows platforms. People who are anti-Microsoft proclaim that their price is justified because Macs are safter, faster and more dedicated to what they want it to do. Also, all programs they do need are available on the Mac. They don't need that other 90% like anti-virus, firewalls, anti-spyware, because there is virtually no virus or spyware for a Mac. Basically if you are an average user, you should get around fine with most new PC's. If you have a big budget, look for fail-proof safety and/or are a heavy multimedia user you should get a Mac. I've been using a PC for many many, many years now, but Apple makes all their products with a high "gadgetfactor" which makes anyone eager to get one. Look at the iPhone or an iMac. They look pretty cool to "just have" even if you won't use most of it. By the way, an iMac is nothing more then a screen and a wireless keyboard and mouse. The whole computer is integrated in one flatscreen. ------------------- ![]()

Yes, it's mainly Windows seems to have the programs, and Macs seem to have the security. Still the difference between Macs and Windows would be really small if they both had equal choice in programs and equal chance to get infected by viruses. The only reasons Windows has more programs and also viruses for it, is because more people use it.
Another thing I've been wondering about... how do people effectively work with a mouse that has only 1 button? Cause the people at my job do, I tried it once, but now I'm just bringing my own mouse.=/ ------------------- Don't mess with THE Battlers!!

The mighty mouse, which is the old mouse you are referring to with only one button, actually has more buttons. On both sides there are gray buttons that you press for various features, and there is a scroll ball fors crolling obviously. Right clicking isn't as necessary in Mac OS X as it is in Windows.
However, the new Apple mouse, the Magic Mouse, actually is fully touchfeatured. As, it doesn't have any specific buttons. Consider it a touch screen where each area does another thing. That mouse has a right click button, a scroll button, etc. Apple mouses are a love hate relationship. You either love them to death or you hate them. I personally hated the old mouse but Apple's new mouse for the 15 minutes I used it at the Apple Store was pretty amazing. If you don't want to use an Apple mouse, just about any USB mouse (even with right click) will work, and right click will work. ------------------- Hey guys... what's up??? This is my signature... There are too many differences to list.
Neither are substantially different in functionality, no matter what anyone says. It all boils down to what one you prefer, or whether you rely on software that is on either OS. You'd have to try both to truely know what one is best for you. quoteIt's just a common misconception, both the mice which apple sell have a right mouse button and a left one. It's designed to look like it is single buttoned for sleekness. ------------------- “If Java had true garbage collection, most programs would delete themselves upon execution.” -Robert Sewell

I definitely think Windows vs. Mac OS X is like Freedom vs. Security.
In Windows, you certainly have more freedom in the software, hardware, and customization of your OS to your standards. This is better because obviously you have more choices to suit YOUR particular needs. You don't need to upgrade to a whole new machine if you need more graphics power, for example. This, in turn, can make the OS less stable though with drivers, etc. You also have more chances to mess up your operating system and software. In Mac OS X, you have more security and less chances to mess up your system. Mac OS X also has less chance of having unstable drivers or software related problems when it comes to the hardware because Mac OS X is made to run on the very particular hardware that Apple uses. You do have less software choices as not nearly as much software is made for Mac OS X and you don't get as much choice of customizing your hardware, so you may have to compromise on the hardware front if you really like the experience of Mac OS X. I am pretty much neutral on which is better. I had a MacBook Pro for 2 years and it was an amazing machine, but my computer usages changed and I didn't need that much hardware, so I sold my MacBook Pro to my brother and bought a much slower computer that still works perfectly for my usage for half the price. I definitely think they both have their uses, strengths, and weaknesses. ------------------- Hey guys... what's up??? This is my signature... Alright, later!!!

The sole difference is the software. Whether one is better than another is subject to debate!
Personally, I think the security argument is baseless, Mac's have flaws, just like every single piece of software out there. Low market share makes an attack less probable, it doesn't make the system more secure. Just look at issues users have been reporting with the latest 27" iMac's. Apple is gaining marketshare and apparently their QA team cannot keep up. Basically, Windows has issues, OSX has issues and, yes, even Linux has issues.

There's no difference if you're using applications available for both.

I use a mac at work but I use Windows for a lot of personal projects and I much prefer it. It just needs a little more trick'n'tune than mac does methink. I can't stand the default setup.
