FireFox Not Retaining Login Status to Various Sites Upon Browser Restarts |
|
Hard to word the thread title properly. A few days ago, possibly when FireFox updated again, whenever I close FF and restart it, even after I restart my PC, it would load up my tabs as usual but log me out of most sites I was logged into in my previous session (except Neoseeker). Specifically, it keeps logging me out of all MSN services like hotmail and XBox.com, as well as my Zap2it TV guide. Prior to this update to 3.5.5 I never had this problem.
I have tried a bunch of things to correct this but nothing has worked. I have uninstalled FF and installed an earlier version of it, to no success. I cleared my cache and cookies manually, but it would still log me out of those sites upon restarting the browser. I went into my internet options in the Control Panel and cleared all temporary files there, but that only affected Internet Explorer. Speaking of Internet Explorer, I just tested the restarting of the browser there and it would keep me logged into FaceBook, but FireFox requires me to re-login there too. For one, does anyone else have this issue since FireFox updated to 3.5.5 (despite me going back to 3.0.15)? If not, does anyone know what the cause of the problem could be and how to fix it? Oh, and I already ran a full virus scan. ------------------- ![]() ![]()

i had that issue, and it just solved itself. or i didnt somethign without remembering. anyway, have you cleared your cookies? if so, it would have forgotten your information. in the options, do you allow cookies to be saved and forms to be auto saved?

No dice. Manually reset all cookies and cleared my cache on FF, then made sure I had the options for saving all cookies and passwords on, like it had always been before, and it's still logging me out of all of my sites each time I close the browser. I've even tried different methods of closing the browser, all having the same effect. I also noticed it no longer gives me the message "Are you sure you want to close all of the tabs?" upon exiting. I miss Netscape

Nope, IE seems to be the same it has always been. I did uninstall and reinstall FF AFTER this problem started, so it wasn't the cause. I mean, it's not too big of a deal, but it's rather inconvenient since I like having the same few tabs open all the time, so when I restart the internet, I want to go directly to the site and browse and not have to spend time logging back in. And with Zap2it, it even resets my option to display show descriptions each time it logs me out. Really not sure what the problem is. Only thing I can think of is that it's taking up a lot of memory and can no longer store information, but I've cleared all cookies, temporary files, and the cache, so not sure why there's still an issue.

it cant be the memory. if its programmed to do something, thats what it will do. the memory consumption does not affect it. however, something is, obviously. thats where i get stumped.

And oddly, my XBox Live status is always at away unless I manually log out and back in, which started happening a couple weeks ago. I'm going to fiddle with my administrator option on Vista and see if that changes anything. It makes no sense why my internet is resetting my login status, even on the 360.

Do you use Ccleaner or any other program which could also clear your cookies?
I had this once and it turned out that Ccleaner and Spybot both cleaned out my cookies instead of firefox. ------------------- ![]()

I use Symantec but it's running fine. Noticed I haven't updated Vista in over a month, so I'm doing that now. Not sure if it relates to the problem, but it doesn't hurt to try. If it doesn't work, I'll activate my system restore point from 3 weeks or so ago to see if that works.
Edit - Neither worked. I guess I'll have to put up with having to re-login to my sites each time I load up FireFox. This message was edited by The Omega on Nov 12 2009. ------------------- ![]() ![]()

I've had it happen before too. It's most likely a corrupted cookie file.
Close your Firefox browser if it's still open and go to your AppData profile folder. If you're using Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data On Windows Vista C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox. Once there look for the folder that is "xxxxxxxx.default" with the xxxxxxxxx being 8 random characters (there should only be one folder, if more than one, start with .default folder first). Locate cookies.sqlite and delete it (in the past I've simply renamed it to cookies.tmp and the problem was solved, but just go ahead and delete the file altogether). If you also see cookies.txt, delete it too but this file may not appear at all so don't worry about it. Open Firefox, go to Neoseeker, add in Name/Password, then close browser again, restart Firefox and see if the settings were saved once you access the site again.

EPIC VICTORY!TLA: always coming through in the clutch! There was a coule more steps to your plan, but after a little searching I found what you said to look for, deleted the cookies file and the cookies-journal file, then loaded up FF, logged into my Windows ID on xbox.com, closed FF, restarted it, clicked on a link on my achievements page online which I had been doing before to test if I was still logged in, and this time I remained logged in. Going to test it now with Zap2it.com since that was the other site giving me trouble. Ironically, I was always logged into Neo during the problem ------------------- ![]() ![]()

cookies.sqlite is a common corrupted file with Firefox. It's done it to me twice. Once on an older version of Firefox and the second being when I updated to Firefox 3.0.15 (which is what I'm using now). Now you'll know what to look for if it happens again.

Yeah, I had a feeling it had to do with upgrading to 3.5.5, but since I couldn't find others with the same problem easily, I wasn't sure the exact cause of the problem. Now I know what do to if it comes back, like you said. Thanks again, buddy. And hurry up and get MW2 so we can kick PL and DMD's asses
