.bin is the file extension for an avg update and for some unknown reason the update server network is down.

my advice is to w8 for grisoft to fix this problem.

This link actually works, the www.free.avg link doesn't seem to work. But I'll wait until tomorrow to see if they fixed it otherwise, I'll do it manually with that link. Thanks.

I have the answer! I got this from another board with the same issues....and it works! You don't need to uninstall and reinstall - that won't work. Here's what you do:

1) go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-updat...
2) make a directory (new folder) on your desktop called AVG
3) from the website I listed, download AVI: 270.6.4
4) from the website I listed, download IAVI: / 1616
5) when you open each of these files, save the download to the directory (new folder on desktop) you made called AVG
6) launch AVG (click on your AVG icon)
7) select tools -> update from directory
8) select the directory (new folder file from desktop) called AVG where you put the downloads
9) As soon as you click that folder, your updates will start and will be complete!

I've been fighting some sort of virus the last few days. AVG had detected several recurring occurrences of it, or them. Today, I got this ".bin file" error, and asssumed that the virus had attacked some executable on my machine. So I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG. Then ... I went out and bought McAfee. And now I find this thread. Ha ha.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this. I need immediate help and don't feel like reading through the pages!

Hi, I'm from the Philippines. Got the same problem. It's 17 here. I repaired, uninstalled and installed AVG, but still I get the same ".bin file is missing". Hope everything will be up soon. I just got my laptop reformatted from a nasty spyware. Don't wanna do that again.

I just went to AVG home site and tried to download the updates from there since I too have a message that a bin file is missing, this did not work for me. Still have the message coming up.

me too! same message yesterday when I click update AVG 8.0. I am in Thailand.

Me too..same challenge...today 17 Aug Aussie time. Wondering if anyone else had a 'viral type' 'secret crush' thing pop up on their Facebook page ... cause that happened to me yest and then this AVG thing. I wonder if they are connected.

I did this and it worked.

Go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update, and scroll down.

You should see four links.

As you download them, make sure that you put them all in their own folder (A folder that will only hold the 4 .bins), because AVG will ask you for a folder that it will browse itself, instead of you telling it explicitly what .bin files to use.

The ones I downloaded were:
1. Windows: 8.0.164 (27.1 MB)
2. Link Scanner DB: 8.0.53 (852.9 kB)
3. AVI: 270.6.4 (6MB)
4. IAVI: / 1616 (25.3 MB)

The last two add protection to Win32/Virut, Worm/Agobot, and the new variant of trojan BackDoor.RBot.

Then, go into AVG, Click tools->Update From Directory,
then find the file you saved them to. Then, click OK.

After that mine worked fine. If it doesn't just tell me and I'll look into it.

1. Open AVG site : http://www.grisoft.com:80/ww.download-update
2. Download two files to your PC : AVI: 270.6.4 & IAVI: / 1616
3. Actvate AVG 8.0 Fee Version
4. Click Tools - Update from Directry
5. Select the foler where you downloaded

Please try this ......

I got the same error message. I uninstalled AVG and reinstalled it and got the same message. Glad I saw this forum.
