Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's Edward Kenway becomes less of an empathetic character with each trailer I see him in. In this latest gameplay trailer, "Under the Black Flag," Kenway comes across as downright bloodthirsty. Righteous? Justified? Potentially, even likely due to Assassin's Creed's history of "good guy" protagonists. To me, he just comes across as one heck of a pirate.
Which is precisely what makes Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag look so amazing to me. It doesn't look like an Assassin's Creed game, it looks entirely like a game about piracy. Certainly, the overstated undertones of good vs. evil, Assassin vs. Templar are still there, but otherwise what we're getting is pure Edward Kenway fighting for his view of freedom one cannonball, one cutlass slash at a time.
Blue water, islands with hidden treasure, ships chasing the sunset, officers in suits pulled beneath the waves, cannonballs pulling trails of smoke, it's all coming together to create one intense pirate adventure. At least, that's what it seems like. There's certain to be some Assassin's Creed insanity buried in there somewhere. Hopefully it doesn't sink the ship.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is planned for release on October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U.
