Of course we have new Starter Packs with the game. Due to the new swapping technology, there are NO Portal Owners' Packs, only starter packs. There were five main ones.
--Console Starter Pack
For the main consoles, we have starter packs for the Wii, WiiU, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and when the consoles are released, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. So no matter what you use, you can still play the game! It comes with the regular version of Wash Buckler, Blast Zone, and Series 3 "Ninja Stealth Elf".
--3DS Starter Pack
For the Nintendo 3DS, we get an entire different game from the consoles. It comes with the regular version of the Swap Force Skylanders Free Ranger and Rattle Shake, along with VOLCANIC (a variant from) "Lava Barf" Eruptor (his series 3 version).
--Dark Starter Pack
A variant from the regular consoles Starter Pack, the Dark Starter Pack comes with five figures, the new Portal of Power, a Mega-Character poster, a Swap Force poster, a Dark character poster, trading cards for the five figures along with their stickers, the game, and at the top of the case is an almost display-case-like plastic holder for the five figures. The five figures are Dark Mega Ram Spyro, Dark Ninja Stealth Elf, Dark Slobber Tooth, Dark Wash Buckler, and Dark Blast Zone. They show up differently in the game as well.
--Skylanders: Swap Force Super Bundle Pack Wal-Mart Exclusive, US, Xbox 360 Only
This is an amazing deal for a Wal-Mart exclusive--only $100 for something that should be far more! Of course, this is preorder, we have no idea what it'll be once pre-ordering is over (which ends on November fifth, or tomorrow). It comes with a character collection poster, the new Portal of Power, the game, LightCore Grim Creeper, The Magic Triple Pack, Ninja Stealth Elf, Wash Buckler, and Blast Zone (a total of seven figures).
--Skylanders Swap Force / Wii U Bundle Pack
Now this package comes with a brand new Wii-U, a Mario game, Skylanders: Swap Force, and all the supplies of a regular console starter pack, but includes Color Shift Wash Buckler (Which is the golden one). Now, if you can, I recommend getting this heavily. Not only do you get a Wii-U for the average $300 price and game, but you get an extremely rare figure that will probably go for $300 on its own on eBay later on.
These Skylanders are NOT swappable and were recently made Skylanders and sent to Earth. These Skylanders cannot switch their parts.
--Countdown --"I'm the Bomb!"
Countdown is a close-to-mid-range attacker, I believe, and IS a Core Character, not a swappable one. His history is...: Countdown was discovered by a group of Yetis who were snowboarding one particularly chilly morning when they came across a big bomb encased in ice. After bringing it back to their cabin, they were shocked when it actually came to life. No one, not even Countdown himself, has any memory of where he came from or how he ended up frozen in the mountains. Since becoming a Skylander, Master Eon has been graciously trying to help piece together fragments of his past. But this has proven difficult, as Countdown loses some of his memory every time he explodes – which happens a lot. In the meantime, Countdown has enjoyed working with Eon and fighting alongside the Skylanders to defend their world against evil – even though he occasionally forgets what he is doing.
--Roller Brawl --"Let's Roll!"
Roller Brawl is a close-range attacker. She also isn't swappable. She makes the third of the already two female Undead elements, and is a lovely addition, if I must say. Her history is...: Roller Brawl grew up with five older vampire brothers, who were all very big and overprotective. Being the smallest of her family, she learned how to use her speed and cunning to become one of the toughest jammers in the Undead Roller Derby League. It was during the championship match when she caught the eye of Kaos, who fell head-over-heels in love with her. But when her overprotective brothers stepped in, Kaos had them captured by Drow and taken prisoner. Roller Brawl swore revenge, but even with her impressive skills, she was no match for an entire Drow army. Having developed a strong distaste for evil, she joined up with the Skylanders to fight against Kaos – while never giving up on her search for her brothers. --Now, I wonder how Roller Brawl felt about Kaos BEFORE he kidnapped her brothers? I sense fanfictions...
--Slobber Tooth --"Clobber and Slobber!"
Slobber Tooth is also a close-range attacker. His backstory states: Having been asleep for thousands of years, Slobber Tooth was awakened by the fiery eruption of two volcanic islands crashing together. Immediately sought out by Kaos to become one of his minions, Slobber Tooth was promised great power. But the gruff and headstrong fighter chose to follow his own path instead. For this, Kaos attacked his ancient petrified homeland. As the only one who could protect his hibernating race, Slobber Tooth fought tooth and tail against Kaos and his minions, ultimately driving them away. For his heroism, Master Eon asked Slobber Tooth to join the Skylanders, where he could continue defending Skylands against the evil Kaos.--He sort of reminds me of Zook's history, which states that they were a... rather, for lack of a better/kinder word, incompetent species that didn't realize they could move for quite a while.
--Zoo Lou --"Nature Calls!"
Zoo Lou is a mid-to-long range attacker, and is a little odd to work with, but otherwise, is an interesting character. His history is: Descended from a long line of shamans, Zoo Lou traveled far and wide to the Seven Strange Strongholds – ancient, mysterious sites of great wonder in Skylands – where he studied the wisdom and fighting styles of the Seven Strange Mages. After many years of traveling and studying, Zoo Lou returned to find an army of trolls had invaded his sacred homeland to mine its natural magic resources. Zoo Lou’s warrior heart burned with fury. And having now mastered the enchanted art of communicating with nature and summoning animals, he unleashed his great mojo – attacking the trolls and single handedly freeing his lands once again. It was this heroic feat that caught the eye of Double Trouble, who then brought Zoo Lou to Master Eon and the Skylanders. --Now, I wonder, would Stormy Stronghold from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure be considered one of the seven strongholds? I wonder...
Series 2/3 Figures
These are the secondary/tertiary version of past Skylanders. Though they have subtitles, these do NOT denote them being variants.
--Blizzard Chill --"Stay Cool!"
For those who aren't acquainted with Chill, she is a brilliant mid-to-long range attacker. I personally prefer her Ice Lancer path, but Blizzard Chill benefits better from her other path. Her history, also, for those who don't know, is: As sworn guardian of the Snow Queen and captain of the guard, Chill held an important position in the Ice Kingdom she called home. Loved by some, feared by others, respected by all, she was a legend in the making until the day a cyclops army kkidnapped the queen when Chill wasn't looking. Heartbroken and ashamed, Chill abandoned the Ice Kingdom and set off to win back the respect and admiration she had lost. In order to regain her honour, Chill is determined to track down the missing queen, but so far all her searching has proven to be in vain. As a member of the Skylanders, Chill feels she has found purpose again. Whether impaling enemies on her javelin, freezing them in blocks of ice, or simply dropping a massive narwhal on their heads, she is pleased to be protecting the innocent once more. But Chill has never stopped searching for her queen. And she never will. Unless she finds her, obviously.
--Super Gulp Pop Fizz --"The Motion of the Potion!"
Pop Fizz is a great attacker no matter what path you choose. He can drop potions that range form orange sodas to poisonous potions. He is a little on the insane side, but that makes him all the more interesting. History: Nobody is quite sure who Pop Fizz was before he became an alchemist, least of all Pop Fizz himself. After many years of experimenting with magical potions, his appearance has changed quite significantly. In fact, no one even knows his original color. But it’s widely known that he is a little crazy, his experiments are reckless, and the accidents they cause are too numerous to measure. Understandably, he has had a difficult time finding lab partners, or anyone that even wants to be near him. In hopes of making himself more appealing to others, he attempted to create the most effective charm potion ever – but that just turned him into a big, wild, berserker. Or maybe that’s just how he saw the potion working in the first place...
--Mega Ram Spyro --"All Fired Up!"
Spyro is the main face of the PlayStation 1 and 2, and was brought back when Skylanders was released. While he may have been slapped in for popularity, I believe Spyro plays a magnificent role as the leader of the Skylanders, no matter what the haters of his new look have to say. History: Spyro is the great, stout-hearted hero of legend, not to mention the number one defender of Skylands. Hailing from a rare race of magic purple dragons, Spyro was born in a land far away from Skylands' furthest frontiers. From a young age, Spyro became a battler for good; a warrior against evil and protector of the peace. His fearless exploits and heroic adventures were even recorded in the Scrolls of the Ancients (and those Ancients didn't keep a record of just any old thing). One of the many Portal Masters who watched Spyro's success with acclaim and applause was the bearded legend himself, Master Eon. It was Eon who transported Spyro through the Portal of Power to his citadel at the Core of Light. Here, Spyro met the Skylanders squad and swiftly agreed to join them in battling all things nasty. During his time as one of the Skylanders, Spyro defeated the evil dragon Cynder when she was spreading fear throughout the land for many years, freeing her from the sinister control of the Undead Dragon King, Malefor. After Cynder vowed to fight for good, she and Spyro went on a dangerous quest in which the Undead dragoness came out smiling. Afterwards, Spyro convinced Master Eon to sign Cynder up as one of the Skylanders. Spyro was also the one who inspired Lightning Rod to become a Skylander after telling the storm giant his stories of faraway places and dangerous adventures.
--Lava Barf Eruptor --"Born to Burn!"
Eruptor has always been an... interesting character for Skylanders. He is best known from commercials where he commonly associates with Pop Fizz and Jet-Vac (interestingly enough, both came out in Giants...). History: Eruptor is a force of nature, hailing from a species that lived deep in the underground of a floating volcanic island until a massive eruption launched their entire civilization to the surface. He's a complete hot head -- steaming, fuming, and quite literally erupting over almost anything. To help control his temper, he likes to relax in lava pools, particularly because there are no crowds.
Swap Force Skylanders
These Skylanders are swappable and can switch their tops and bottoms.
--Free Ranger --"Whip up a Storm!"
Free Ranger is a Storm Chicken, and is fearless, despite his name. He was even willing to jump into the storm of the Darkness when he was young!! History: Free Ranger was hatched during a storm when a thunderous bolt of lightning struck his egg. From that very moment, his destiny was clear – he would become the greatest storm chaser ever known! He spent his entire life pursuing hurricanes, spinning inside tornados, and riding lightning. But a day came when he encountered a storm unlike any other. It was unnatural and ominous, billowing with evil, and leaving only desolation in its wake. Free Ranger was standing at its edge, moments from boldly leaping into it, when he was stopped by none other than Master Eon. The wise Portal Master told him that it was The Darkness that raged before them, and if he were up to the challenge, he could join the Skylanders to help defend against it in the Cloudbreak Islands.
--Hoot Loop --"Let's Ruffle Some Feathers!"
Hoot Loop is definitely a fun character. With all the fans all over the Internet about owls, it's no wonder Activision finally gave us an owl to work with! Hoot Loop is a little funny, in a few ways similar to Pop Fizz personality-wise, but at the same time, is unique in his own right. History: Hoot Loop was raised by a guild of magicians in Skylands’ most famous traveling circus. At a young age, he perfected illusions and spells that only the very best of their guild could perform, and even mastered the art of teleportation! Soon enough, he became the star of the show, known far and wide as the Amazing Hoot Loop. However, one day an army of Greebles disguised as clowns invaded, determined to destroy the popular circus. It was then that Hoot Loop gave a performance that few would ever forget. Using his incredible powers, he fought off the invaders and saved the circus - to the raucous applause of the many spectators – including Master Eon, who presented Hoot Loop with an opportunity to learn some real magic as a member of the Skylanders.
--Magna Charge --"Attract to Attack."
Magna Charge is based off magnets, and even his voice is flat and even to show that he is a machine. History: Magna Charge came from the great race of Ultron robots, but was mysteriously created with a giant magnet head. This proved problematic, as his peers were all made of metal and were constantly being pulled towards him. As a result, Magna Charge was exiled to a faraway island, where he eventually learned to control his magnetic powers. After years of training, he returned to his home to demonstrate his abilities, but found everything completely destroyed. In searching for answers, Magna Charge caught the attention of Master Eon, who realized the unique Ultron soldier was a perfect candidate for the Skylanders. --Now, I take his history this way: after the Giants took out the Arkeyan race, he returned to find them missing thousands of years later. With that said, how did Eon managed to tell this robot that it was the Skylanders who were the cause of their devastation? Or would being a robot prevent him from personally caring? After all, robots are timeless, right?
--Rattle Shake --"Go Ahead... Snake My Day!"
Rattle Shake is a fun character, even if he does seem a bit like Rattlesnake Jake from Rango. He makes tons of snake puns, and he's just... fun to use. History: Some say Rattle Shake was the best tracker in the Cloudbreak Islands. Others say he could strike the center of a gold coin at a thousand paces. But the legend of Rattle Shake was immortalized when he found himself trapped by the Black Hat Gang, the infamous group of cowboys who literally were large cows… and evil ones at that. They threatened to plunder the local village unless Rattle Shake led them inside the magical volcano Mt. Cloudbreak, where they hoped to discover enchanted treasure. Badly outnumbered, the ever calm Rattle Shake magically summoned every snake in the area and overtook the notorious bovines in an epic fight. The tale of his heroism was heard by Master Eon, who then recruited him to the Skylanders.--I dunno about you guys, but I found his history comical. Just comical.
These Skylanders glow on the Portal and have a Flash-Bomb effect when they first appear in game causing a 100 damage to any enemy on-screen. Returning characters, as LightCores, do not have new upgrades.
--Flashwing --"Blinded by the Light!"
Flashwing can be a close-range or long-range attacker depending on what path you choose for her. Interestingly enough, she is the second dragon in the Earth element, and was also a love interest for the other dragon in her element. History: Flashwing's true origins are a mystery. But her first appearance came when Bash made a wish that he could fly and looked up to see a shooting star streak across the sky and in a valley below. In the centre of the glowing impact crater was a large, brilliant geode - which suddenly cracked open to reveal Flashwing. Bash may not have soared that day, but his heart sure did, because Flashwing was beautiful... and lethal. As soon as Bash stepped closer, the gem dragon turned towards him. Not knowing if he was friend or foe, she blasted him off of the cliff with a full force laser pulse from her tail! Perhaps Bash flew that day after all.
--Grim Creeper --"Your Time is Up!"
I don't know much about Grim Creeper because I don't own him yet, but here is his history: When he was young, Grim Creeper visited the prestigious Grim Acres School for Ghost Wrangling, hoping to attend as a student. But when the Scaremaster interviewed him, he found that Grim didn't have any of the usual training that other students had. Because of this, he was turned away. However, as the young Grim was about to leave, a herd of rampaging ghosts suddenly flooded the school -- carrying away the faculty and leaving the students to fend for themselves. Grim Creeper stood his ground -- not only defending the other students, but using his amazing reaping talents to fight back the ghosts and contain them until help could arrive. Now a Skylander, Grim is considered one of the best reapers ever to swing a scythe, proving that studies alone are no substitute for bravery, passion and true heroic spirit.
--Star Strike --"Shoot For the Stars!"
I'm pretty glad Kaos didn't manage to do this, because who knows WHAT he could have accidentally done otherwise! --> Looking for a way to magically banish the Skylanders, Kaos poured through every dusty scroll and ancient tome he could find. Upon stumbling across a rare and extremely powerful spell, he began to recite its words. However, he sneezed midway through the incantation. As a result, instead of sending the Skylanders far away, Star Strike was plucked from her home in the distant cosmos and brought into Skylands. Surprised, Kaos thought he’d won a powerful new ally in the mysterious and reserved Star Strike. But she knew evil when she saw it and promptly unleashed her fierce magical powers on him. Word of her victory over Kaos spread quickly and she was soon asked by Master Eon to join the Skylanders. --I think it's pretty obvious why I like her so much. *points to my username*
--Smolderdash --"A Blaze of Glory!"
Smolderdash's name is a play on the word balderdash and she's the first female Fire Skylander. Everything about her just screams powerhouse. She wields a freaking fire whip, for crying out loud. History: Smolderdash had always wanted to be a royal defender of the Fire Temple - home of the First Flame, a sacred torch that had been ignited by the original Fire Source. Unfortunately, she had been born during an eclipse and was believed by her people to be cursed, which prevented her from such an honor. But when Kaos stole the flame and used it to light the candles on his birthday cake, it was Smolderdash who went after it. Blazing like a comet, she dashed into Kaos' Lair, repelled the troll security force with her flaming whip, and retrieved the sacred flame just before Kaos blew out the candles. Smolderdash returned home as a champion of her people and was finally granted the honor of becoming a royal defender. But she graciously declined, having set a new goal for herself - to help fight against Kaos as a member of the Skylanders. --Ghost Rider better look out, he might be getting replaced.
--Warnado --"For the Wind!"
Warnado is a rather easy-going turtle, though he spins constantly. I rather like him, but afraid I've only managed to use him very little for I've only borrowed his series one figure from friends. Here's his history: Warnado was hatched in the fury of a rare and powerful Enchanted Twister. Although initially frightened and quite dizzy, over the passing years he grew to enjoy his whirling surroundings and learned many abilities and secrets of the Air Elemet. This led to Warnado becoming a powerful force and the only known turtle of his kind. Now, the only time he gets dizzy is when standing still.

A+ for effort, Star. I'm impressed at all the work you're willing to do!
I'd say Countdown is really more of a long range character because of his rockets and ability to summon his little bomb-drones. It is true that his head rolling is harder to aim from long range, but thankfully, most attackers will come to you anyway. Otherwise, great!
And if I may, I'd like to contribute some data on Popthorn;
Don't let his little size fool you; this little guy is a monster for any enemy of the Skylanders! While Popthorn takes some getting used to(he has two states that affect what attacks he can use---puffed and popped---that you can switch between easily), the payoffs are spectacular if you can learn how to use him. In his puffed state(press B to enter it in the Wii version), he shoots little spikes at foes at a rapid rate that deal only a little damage each(10--15), but because of how fast he shoots them, the damage becomes staggering very quickly. His popped state(press C to enter it in the Wii version) involves him blowing air(not the hot kind, of course) at his foe and this also rapidly deals damage to the enemy that adds up quickly. He moves faster in his popped state, but can attack foes on any side of him with his homing spikes and still move while in his puffed state, too!
"...I've been asleep for more than 1,000 years of my life. I did the math. Technically, I think that makes me the oldest hag on the planet. Not that I'll ever act my age. Wouldn't be much fun."
