Mobile Suit Gundam: AEUG Vs. Titans (PS2)

Though it's taken a while for Bandai to follow up on the massive popularity of its arcade mecha fighting game Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation Vs. Zeon, it has finally done so, or rather it will later this fall. Mobile Suit Z Gundam: AEUG Vs. Titans, announced today by way of Impress Game Watch, is a successor to that original game in the same way that Zeta Gundam was a successor to the original Gundam TV series -- it offers more mecha, better-looking mecha, and those transforming mecha that became such a big deal during the mid-1980s.
Like the first game, AEUG Vs. Titans offers two-on-two battles from a third-person perspective, taking place in 3D battlefields from all through the cartoon series. Players can select their own giant robot and an AI-controlled wingmate from two sets of playable mecha -- one for the AEUG (the good guys), one for the Titans (the bad guys). Unlike the original Gundam series, though, it's not quite so easy to say which side gets the coolest robots. While the Titans have access to the hulking The-O and the amusingly-named Gabthley, the AEUG substantially improves on the original series' Federation force with the shiny gold Hyaku-Shiki and the transforming Zeta Gundam.

All the mecha that could transform in the show can also do so in the game, after filling up their power gauge. To adjust each mobile suit's capabilities in the name of fairness, the gauge increases at a variable rate depending on which one you pick. Once that gauge is full, a suit like the Zeta Gundam can temporarily transform into its alternate mode, gaining new capabilities for a limited time. Non-transforming suits, meanwhile, can use the gauge to execute powerful "Hyper Combo" attacks.

As another game balance feature, the game isn't necessarily a fight to the finish between two mecha. Instead of a life gauge for a single mobile suit, each side has a power gauge representing their strength in a given battle. The object, then, is to destroy enough mobile suits on the opposing side to drain its resources and win the day. The more valuable the mobile suit, the greater the effect its loss will have on the fortunes of its side. Therefore, it may not be smart to pick the best possible mobile suit for every battle, because while you can come back to the field after dying, letting your Zeta Gundam or Hyaku-Shiki get blown up over and over will sap that power gauge quickly. Conversely, players in weaker mobile suits may still want to go after tougher targets, even if you take a lot of damage in the process.

The selection of so-far-announced mobile suits is as follows, divided into the two sides. Some suits are common to both sides, but they may have slightly different capabilities depending on which side you pick.

Bandai plans to display a playable version of the game at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo August 23-24, as part of the C3 2003 character show event. Subsequently, it will find wide release in Japanese arcades by the end of September. As for a home version, AEUG Vs. Titans runs on the PlayStation 2-based System 246 hardware, so it's likely we'll see news of a PS2 port some time next year.

Yep, I posted a link with pictures in a reply to a thread over in the FvZ forum. This game is a clone of FvZ, though they are calling it the sequal. I have worries that this is going to end up being FvZ with new models and textures, and the transforming zeta Gundam.

And by the way, I never saw any news when it came to PS2. It is coming out in Japan on arcade only next month, but supposedly it was built on the hardware much like ps2's so speculation says this will most likely make it to the ps2.

Anyway, the graphics look even better... pics:

Not that it's bad, but i mean, ida liked my first new age console Z gundam game to be a bit more....non...man in suit..ish.

From the pics of MS laying down with stupid invulnerable markers on them, i don't think they changed that.

Then again, the MKII kicks royal. Sweeeeeeet. And I like that hyper combo meter. Makes the man in suit deal work a bit better as an arcade FFA.

No...most who dislike 0083 dislike it because of it's paper-thin Top Gunny plot and continuity busting technology...

And if power is what you want, the Zeta-era suits are much more powerful than anything from the Stardust Rebellion.

And how can a sequel be a rip-off

Don't worry GK. We'll get out 0083 fix with Encounters in Space.

Its out in arcades in Japan now...but GK is somewhat correct...it runs on the same engine as FedVSZion DX, so it looks very similar..the suits are obviously different, as is sound and music...gameplay is almost identical...except the super combo move and the transforming move.
