If all you wanted for Christmas was an oddball, over-the-top tactical strategy game that you could download on XBLA then Christmas is coming a month late. In which case, it's not really Christmas at all. Still, Skulls of the Shogun is coming out on January 30 and that's something to be celebrated. It has taken its damn time (three and a half years, in fact), but it can soon be yours at standard downloadable price 1200 MSP ($15.00).
Self-described as an "invigorating cocktail of 1960’s-flavored sorcery and strategy" Skulls of the Shogun is another fine example of the unique titles you can find on XBLA. It follows in the footsteps of Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, Awesomenauts, Raskulls and yes, even Castle Crashers. That is to say, it's likely to be great fun and full of personality.
17-BIT co-founder Jake Kazdal had the following statement for fans:
"After three and a half years, Skulls of the Shogun is finally ready to be released. We’re ecstatic we could bring Skulls to all four of Microsoft’s platforms, and bring them all together with cross-platform functionality. We appreciate the excitement and patience by all the Skulls of the Shogun fans, and we here at 17-BIT believe the wait will be well worth it."
If you noticed Kazdal's reference to "platforms" in the plural case, that's because Skulls of the Shogun is also coming to the Windows 8 store, Microsoft Surface, and Windows Phones. Gamers can challenge their friends cross-platform, asynchronously even, anywhere they please. It's a first for Microsoft, and for most platforms in general.
Check out Skulls of the Shogun on January 30 for only 1200 MSP on the Xbox 360 through XBLA, or on Windows 8, Microsoft Surface and Windows Phones via the Windows store. If you're looking for a fun game with some good indie potential, then this one should hold you over until some of February's bigger releases.
