Is it illegal...

... to serve somebody for something that needs proof of age if the passport has expired? 'Cause 9/10 people will accept it but then you get the odd jobsworth who won't take it. If it is then that's just quite annoying, really. Means I have to pay like £60 for a provisional or a new passport even though I have no ambition to drive and probably won't be going on holiday for a while. :/

Cheers TheButcher99999. What's the difference in difficulty between faking an expired and valid one, though? Don't see why anyone would go through the effort of getting a years-old passport photo and risk not getting served than buying a blag valid one. >__>

I'm sure there are lots of technical things that need to be done in order to get a fake passport passed off as a real one at customs, but a fake one to buy booze wouldn't need to be as advanced, just something that looks like a real one with a fake date on.

A expired passport will likely be using the old passport design which is a lot less advanced as the current ones being used. I had a guy come in with an expired passport and I have never seen a passport designed like his one before, there was no way I could tell if it was real or not. (It was a British one).

I am getting annoyed with this "Challenge 25" thing, it used to be "Challenge 21". The problem is there is no consistency, I can go into the same place and be served by the same guy over the course of a few days and not be IDed the first few times only to be IDed another time. It's getting to the point where they just need to ID everyone.

Lol, a beard doesn't always help, it can make it look like you are trying to look older. Safest thing is to carry ID around with you

If you don't drive just get a provisional driving license, it's cheaper than having to renew your passport every now and then.

They stopped doing them for a while when I was 18 I think, or there was some other reason I couldn't get one. I just use my provisional driving licence if I ever get IDed, but I'm in a Uni town so I mainly buy booze on campus so very rarely get IDed.

Getting a passport this xmas, i can safely say i've used my student card for most places. Only really anal stores or clubs wont accept that.

God I hate those things, I'm 27 and still getting ID'd on occasion. FML.
