I'm currently studying for a theory test and some of the advice they give is shocking.
Apparently, if your car catches fire in a tunnel and it is still drivable (wtf? since when could a car catch fire but still be fully drivable?) I should drive it clear of the tunnel before abandoning it and calling the emergency services. Their reasoning for this is that danger will be caused to drivers behind me... Are they *bleep*ing crazy?

lol as stupid as it sounds that makes sense. In a tunnel your in a confined space. If you leave your car there your blocking the people behind. In the event there is an explosion, everyone in the tunnel is basicalled F|'ed in the A. If your in the open on the other hand, people can get past you, less damage caused etc etc.
Yeah, but if I'm driving the car and it explodes because I am giving more fuel to the already burning engine, then I am in the worst possible place to be in the entire tunnel... Self preservation man
What's the *bleep*in' point in scratchin my car with your keys you *bleep*in' piece o shit.
I once saw someone do that to my Uncles car, and so did he. He chased the *bleep*ers down and scratched them a bit with his keys. And by scratched I mean almost got a conviction for GBH.
I'm planning on taking my theory test in the next few weeks.
What books should I buy? With low costs in mind, but making sure the books have the latest information (2009 edition etc), links would be greatly appreciated.
The highway code book and a CD that looks like this is all you need. I passed with full marks on the multiple test part by reading the highway code once and using this CD. The CD has a simulated test that is almost identical to the real thing.
Had my first lesson today, damn driving is more complicated than I thought it would be..at one point slammed my foot down on the brake rather than the clutch, the instructor didnt expect that sudden emergency stop XD.
Can't wait to drive my car.
Keep your left foot hovering the clutch unless you are driving a rally car.
I understand how hard driving is at the start though, the first time I set off I must have nearly hit the rev limiter before I eased off the clutch... Big mistake.
40 minutes would barely give you time to drive away from your house to the location you are practicing at. I suppose people who do more regular short lessons do pass with less hours though. When you have been driving a few hours, especially in traffic, you lose your concentration and don't learn anything.
The problem when I was learning to drive is I couldn't get insured so that I could practice. I was a decent driver when I passed my test but he kept picking up on small faults that I had not realised like looking at the gear stick when my gears get stuck (4>5 was a bitch) or not doing a final check throught the right window when merging onto a motorway.
You was giving it some on a couple of those roundabouts, when my dad had a bike we used to go around the huge ones a couple of times so he could get a knee down.
The hardest maneuver is sticking to the speed limit religiously.
Agreed. Parallel park is easy as long as you know your reference points and can judge your distance from the kerb easily. I thought the hardest maneuver was the uphill reversing around a corner, I judge the way the car is going by the way it is moving - but because I have to prevent myself rolling I have to keep judging it from a stop.
Is the minimum age to drive goin to be changed to 18 in january 2010 does anybody knw, my 17th birthday it 3 days b4 so i was just wondering lol
I've not heard anything about it, but as long as you apply for yor provisional license before the date then I don't see why they would refuse you lessons or a test.
Technically your supposed to hold 10 and 2, with your arms bent at the elbow with a 45* angle. When people pass they tend to use their right arm closer to the top of the wheel and keep their left hand loose for gears and handbrake.
I find that women drivers are closer to the wheel also, usually because they prefer to look through the front window around corners instead of a combination of front and side window. No idea why.
Nothing better than practice, you could probably get a couple of hours worth of practice in your parents car for the same price as a lesson. Just find a really quiet estate and get the footwork right, you won't get pulled even if you don't have insurance or anything.
And I passed my test last week with only 2 minors, and both of those where because of some tosser who decided to cut me off on a right turn by overtaking just as I was turning in, and then turning right infront of me so I had to slam the brakes. I think the examiner was a bit of a pushover though as I made a bunch of other mistakes that she just ignored - and she didn't bother to test me on reverse bay park which I am shit at unless going in at 45 degree's.
I guarantee my first few cars will die at my hands, most probably just fall apart internally. I only have £1000 tops to spend on a car for the first few years if I have any hopes of paying the insurance and petrol.
I would have honestly got out and failed my test again for beating the shit out of the pedestrian while in control of a motor vehicle... Its as bad as drivers who make you fail your test by undertaking you or parking behind you while parallel parking.
Don't robins have a 700cc engine and a topspeed of around 50mph? I'd think again if I was you, you at least want something fast for the autobahn if you pass through Germany.
Tbh I wish I hadn't bothered doing lessons either. I spent over £1500 on lessons when I could have bought a better car and learned offroad or with a parent.
No, I'm just sick of getting quotes for £6,000 or more on shitty cars and wanted to see the alternative. I have no idea how people who recently passed manage to get quotes for £1300 or less. Entering all of the details into the website is also a complete bitch.
I could go on my parents but then I don't earn a NCD and my insurance will go down very slowly so I will end up paying more in the long run.
I don't see why someone who has passed their test (which is getting progressively harder btw) is deemed such a high risk when my alcoholic neighbour across the street, who is over 70 and has the reaction time of a cow pays £500 yearly in a BMW. Obviously I have less experience, but how the hell do I gain experience when the lowest quote I have gotten on a 1.4L car is £8999... And why do they ask such bullshit questions like if I am employed, what I do for work, how many children under 16 are in my family and if I am married - this obviously affects how well I can drive.
I'm not really sure where I am going wrong. I even tried going back and changing stuff to be ideal (better postcode, parked in a secure car park over night ect). Maybe its the cars I am putting in, I've been looking through the paper/ebay/classified ads for a car that I can afford and then putting in the reg so I can get a quote with my saved details.
The online quote system is not able to provide you with a quote

I get that when doing an online quote with Quinn, which could explain why it hasn't been coming up on confused.com. Is anyone else getting that message online and how long does it take to do over the phone?
If I was to make a car insurance company and sell car insurance cheaper for white people than for black people, I would spend my next few months in a cell or end up paying some huge fines. Why is it fair that they can make a women's insurance cheaper than a mans, or a woman only insurance company. Its the same thing with age really, but to a lesser extent.
The government should nationalise insurance or something, so that regardless of age you pay £600, and then the low risk people who can afford the increase to their insurance help out the new drivers so they can get experience, and the new drivers don't pay insane amounts of money to drive fiats.
