Building a gaming PC

I've recently got the idea to build from scratch, my own gaming PC. I've never done this but I have somewhat of an idea of what to do and of the parts I want. Could someone please come up with a check list for me so that I don't over look anything? Also, is a floppy drive necessary or should I include one? Thanks in advance.

my reccomendation, for a $2000 US dollar GAMING PC

CPU- Core 2 Duo e6400
Mobo- Gigabyte DS3
Video Card- EVGA 8800GTS 320MB
Sound card- Creative Xfi Xtremegamer(not fatality)
CPU fan- Zalman 9700
Storage- 2 Seagate 160Gb 7200.9 hard drives in RAID 0
RAM- 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 RAM(2x1gb sticks)
2 DVD drives, a case you like
A 2000dpi laser mouse
some keyboard thats comfy
some extra 120mm case fans to fill the slots
a 550watts or better powersuppy with high amps on the 12v rails, rated for SLI
Some 5.1 speakers, they can be obtianed cheaply)
a 19 inch monitor(or better depending on budget( with 8ms or less response time, and 700:1 or better contrast ratio

believe it or not, that would be just at 2000 bucks. and it would be kickass. of course there are ways all over that to cut the price down. im jsut giving that as a general example. you can tune down any part really and cheapen it but i dont know your budget.

If you want a cheaper gaming rig you could always go with AMD. And yes i know they aren't as fast as Intel, but that X2 6000+ is a really good buy. Its clocked at 3ghz and i would recommend m2n32-sli as a motherboard, just in case you want to add a second video card.

Just a quick word of advice. If you buy a floppy drive, get the one with the 13 in 1 memory card slot. Believe me, you'll love it.

A rule of thumb is never use a PSU that comes with the case. They suck. And when they die, they take some components with them.

1) Don't use a PSU from a case.. some psu's are fine.. there are aobut 5 of which i know of... one is the coolermaster centurion something... one of the models comes with the PSu i haev now...

2) the e6420 is better than the e6400 and costs near the same

3) the 6000+ is crap compared to the e6420 and is around the same price

4) Most games are coming out on DVD now.. or there are two versions....

5) Why the F, would you want a CD reader.. a DVD burner costs 30 bucks or something.. basically 8 bucks more than the CD burner.. and you don't want to end up with shit...

6) Case fans.. don't bother.. i have the fans that come with my case and they are very quiet, and keep it very cool... antec 900....

7) CPU fans.. the cpu cooler comes wit it and it fine.. the e6420 can get to 3.0ghz or so withouth needing a new better cooler...

8) Floppy drive.. if u want one.. get one.. i don't use one.. i don't have one in this PC... drivers are downloaded and come on CD's and are way to big for floppy's so. yeah.. RAID is all i can think of that uses floppy.. BUT vista allows USB or CD or other ways...
