It was three years ago at PAX 2010 in Seattle Washington. A man shoved a controller in my hands and said I could win a bag of diamonds. I sat down, not quite realizing what was going on, and found I was playing Monaco, winner of the Grand Prize and an award for Excellence in Design at the 2010 IGF awards. More by accident than talent, I won that game. Now, three years later, Monaco is coming to Steam and XBLA on April 24.
Three long years. Three long years of accidentally spilling that bag of fake diamonds and then either stepping on the gems within or vacuuming them with a storm of snaps and clacks. Every time I'd be reminded of Monaco and wonder, "Where did that game ever go?" Pocketwatch Games and developer Andy Schatz could probably fill a book with his development woes. I like to think he cursed me with those diamonds.
Nevertheless, Monaco is here. A four player co-op game (either locally or online) where the goal is to, "Sneak, steal, and run for your lives." Pick from a variety of in-game classes which will allow you to plow through a map in a variety of different ways, for instance the Locksmith, the Pickpocket or The Mole. The game launches on PC and Xbox 360 on April 24. Three years after it stumbled into my life. A man. Confusion. Diamonds.
