God Eater (Gods Eater Burst in western markets) was one of those games that had a solid reception in Japan but received a relatively lukewarm welcome from western audiences. Maybe God Eater 2 will be the title that leaves its mark, after all, these dozen new screenshots from the PSP/PS Vita title certainly look particularly exciting. Without a localization announced yet, it may not matter how excited we are. A long wait is still ahead of us.
During a developer demo during 2012's Tokyo Games Show a Shift designer made the claim that God Eater 2 would be better than Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (which is already available in Japan). With Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate releasing in North America on March 19 on 3DS and Wii U, it should be a good sign of how excited western audiences are for that sort of game.
Considering Monster Hunter really started to catch on with western audiences last generation, there should certainly be an audience. Add in the fact there's not really anything comparable on Sony handhelds and, at least in my opinion, it's less about whether we want it (we want it) and more about how quickly Shift and D3 Publisher can get it to us. If God Eater 2 is only getting localized around the same time Monster Hunter 4 is, I'd say they've missed their window.
Certainly an interesting situation to see work out. I guess it's starts with seeing whether God Eater 2 is well-received in Japan when it's released later this year. Hopefully we'll hear more about a North American localization around E3. Also, just call it God Eater 2 over here... come on.
