The game everyone has been waiting for now has a release date and price. Yes, Double Dragon: Neon, the downloadable retro throwback for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will be releasing on September 11 and 12 for $9.99 or 800 MSP respectively. Okay, so maybe this isn't the top game on everyone's most anticipated fall releases list, but it's great to see Double Dragon returning.
Classic beat 'em up action arcade games are in short supply, these days. If Double Dragon: Neon can persuade people the genre is alive an well, it will surprise a lot of people -- including myself. I lived off of these games as a kid, but haven't played anything similar since Castle Crashers. Now that's a beat 'em up worth bringing back the genre for. Color me intrepid, however, because whenever a game -- err, well anything -- is self-described as "bro-tastic" I die a little inside.
Nevertheless, Billy and Jimmy are back to fight the evil Skullmageddeon and save their, yes their, girlfriend Marion. Here's hoping WayForward Technologies really blows us away with Double Dragon: Neon, and we see the franchise reborn and flourishing. Or, you know, it will exploit the nostalgia of thousands and fail to deliver a memorable experience. The fun is in the mystery.
