No one really expected to hear Ubisoft announce that "Spies vs. Mercs" mode would be returning in Splinter Cell: Blacklist. At the time everyone thought the game was taking a new, more action packed direction, though we've certainly been proven wrong since. Now that it's back and we're comfortable with the game's continued respect for stealth, how about a look at the multiplayer mode? Ubisoft delivers, detailing the 2v2 classic Spies vs. Mercs game type.
Here are the main features related to the unique multiplayer mode:
- Spies are played in third-person, Mercs are played in first-person
- Spies infiltrate and hack three terminals, Mercs defend
- Spies can climb throughout the environment, Mercs can use gadgets to set traps
- Spies use the shadows to hide, Mercs have flashlights and can listen for footsteps
It should be readily apparent that Spies and Mercs are vastly different entities and the playstyles for each class are complex and unique. It's hard to grasp the difference until you experience the third-person vs. first-person multiplayer mode yourself. Now consider how the gameplay changes on a controller vs. with mouse and keyboard. Gah, it must be insane to balance.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is coming to PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U on August 20.
