Horses: The Final Nail

Let's face it. Over the last few Call of Duty games, there's been a certain degree of innovation but I truly believe they've run out of ideas with horses.

Besides to just travel in non-combat situations, I can't even think of an applicable situation for horses. In Empire: Total War, set in the 18th century, the rise of Gunpowder and Artillery units begins to make Cavalry obsolete, as infantry are far superior and more versatile through riflemen, grenadiers, and light infantry roles. How is this relevant? Well, back then, a unit firing by rank could severely cripple cavalry and World War I was also a hilarious example of that.

Since Black Ops 2 takes place sometime in the 2000s, it's safe to assume that technology is still around. Automatic rifles also essentially make horses obsolete unless you're riding Kevlar-plated horses. (((But even then, every standard-equipped soldier is equipped with an underbarrel grenade launcher and Kevlar doesn't help that much.)))

Unless the idea of the game is to ride down hapless unarmed peasantry with naught but a saber and horse, I think I'll be giving this game a miss.

I'm going to take this as Call of Duty's very own Bill and Ted moment where it doesn't quite make sense and I'm having suspend disbelief a fair bit for it to work, but it's funny so I don't mind. As for the setting of the game the horse segment takes place in the 1980's, not that it helps given automatic weapons still existed then though the game switches between 1980's and 2025, the horse segment is a 1980's mission.

I don't think the Kevlar would stop the impact of the explosion from completely knocking the horse over and having a similar effect as killing the horse in the sense it'd incapacitate it and the rider would be vulnerable.

Horses can used to travel to point A to point B. If a situation presented itself to you that you need to get to a destination or were chasing someone and you couldn't find any cars or transport except for horses! So suddenly, the character I'm playing suddenly knows how to ride a horse and there's a herd or stable that somehow makes it a better option over a car? Let's face it, only the most remote locations in the world don't have cars.
