	Log in to remove this sponsored message I was fascinated at The Champions League at an early age. I found the enthralling ties of the European giants a joy to behold. I dreamt that one day, I would be swooped away from my current team at Obolon Kyiv's youth contingent to join the big dogs in Europe... Maybe Real Madrid... Or Manchester United... The possibilities are endless... The first game of the season awaited us. The under-19s took on Shakhtar Donetsk's stars of the future. A game which is arguably the toughest game in our season. We've been hovering around mid-table for a couple of years before I joined the club. My first season with Oblon was quite good. We finished 7th out of 14 teams and now we were hoping to do better this year. I started in the centre of midfield today. The lynchpin. The backbone. The anchorman. We walked out to a breezy summers day on the outskirts of Kiev. A few spectators were dotted round a derelict stadium which at my glance could hold around 500 people. I hoped that one of these spectators was a scout for the big teams. Making notes about me as I played the best game of my life, scoring a hattrick and being a rock in the centre. I snapped out of my daydream as we were about to kick off. The game started. I could tell from the first 10 minutes that this would be played at a slow tempo. Perfect for doing my trademark crunching tackles in and taking this game by the scruff of its neck. Finally. A breakthrough. Igor Kozar, our energetic left-back, darted past 2 Shakhtar players and whipped a ball into the 12-yard box. Our big, monstrous striker, Pavlo Kovlev, mercilessly thumped the ball with his head and smacked the post. Luckily enough, Kozar drifted into the box and picked up onto the loose ball and smashed it into the empty net. Typical full-back's finish. 1-0 to us. We faced a barrage of shots from Shakhtar but most of them drifted wide in the wind which picked up during the last 20 minutes. The remainder of them shots were saved comfortably by our goalkeeper. A long ball was aimed at Kovlev who tried his best to muscle off his defender but couldn't. The ball was slowly rolling to me and I latched onto it. Unfortunately, the first touch that I had wasn't the best so I over-hit my touch a bit. The opposing Shakhtar player was sprinting for the ball ahead of me. I had to get the ball first. No matter what. Both of us sprinted to the ball at the same distance away. I knew that a 50/50 challenge would be an option here. So I went for it. Then... CRUNCH SNAP I didn't feel anything for the first few seconds but then I felt an excruciating pain in my left leg. I screamed loudly and asked for our manager. I was looking around and seen players of both teams with their hands upon their heads and some players with their hands clasped around their mouths. I then realised what I had done. I was rushed to hospital in the middle of Kiev and was immediately assisted by the doctor. He gave me an x-ray and did some tests on my leg. I was given oxygen to help ease the pain a bit but I still couldn't bear it. The doctor returned with the results. I turns out that I had broke both my fibia and tibia. 	I thought that I could be one of those people who you see on the news or in the papers. The people who overcome their obstacles to achieve something great in life. I could be the man who conquers the footballing world but at aged 16, being asked to retire from playing football due to a double leg break. I trundled out onto the training pitch at least a year before my injury. After training, I knew that I had lost my ability to play football to the standards of my club. I was so focused on not getting injured again so my mind was in complete distress. I retired 2 days later. 4 years on and I still remember the events that transpired on that summers day in Kiev. I was an avid spectator of Obolon under-19's games and seen them finish 3rd in my first year out and then 1st in the second year. I was very happy, of course, but I could have been a part of it. I would have been 18 at the time so I probably would have still been playing for them and to see them win a trophy was a funny feeling. About 2 weeks after that, I got invited to a trial day at Metalurg Zaporizhya. Not for new footballers, but for new backroom staff to help fill in gaps. Their last manager apparently had a vicious argument with the chairman about transfer policies and subsequently quit the club. He was quite a popular character with fans and also the backroom staff there too. This led to a mass exodus which saw all of the staff leave the club in spite. Since then, the chairman has sold the club and employed a new manager. Who then organised a trial day to seek out the best backroom staff for the job at hand. I reluctantly accepted this chance. As money was tight at the moment and I craved football so I thought it would be great to be a part of a football club. Not a footballer, but the next best thing. I travelled about 300 miles south-west of Kiev to Zaporizhya, a city situated on the banks of the River Dnieper. I arrived at the Slavutych-Arena, the ground of Metalurg Zaporizhya and me and about 20 others were given a full tour of the stadium. It's a fantastic stadium. It holds only around 11,000 but it was renovated in 2006 and it looked great. We went down to the pitch and we each took a group of 5 players and "coached them" with self-devised training routines. I could have been a scout, I could have been a physio but I decided to be a coach because I felt I could engage with the players more in a coaching role. I got the job. But I had to move from my home in Kiev. I moved with my girlfriend and my 2-year-old son to Zaporizhya. We bought a flat with two bedrooms overlooking the river. I started work on the following Monday. And I couldn't be more happier. Things went well in our first season. We finished 2nd in the First Division to get promoted to the Premier League. But then our manager, Ihor Atamanyuk, sadly developed heart problems and had to leave the club, leaving the managerial position open. And it was open for another 2 days before I got a call from the chairman. He was telling me how delighted he was with the coaching ability of mine and he told me about considering the managerial position. At 24 years old, I didn't have the experience of the top managers in the world like Sir Alex Ferguson. But I didn't think about that. In a heartbeat, I accepted the position.

	So there I was. I was donning a new suit and driving in my Peugeot 408 to the training ground for the first time as manager. I was excited about the task at hand. The top Ukrainian newspapers said that we'd be destined for relegation back to the First Division. Even on the main sports channels in Ukraine, I was watching the Ukrainian Premier League preview show. They were doing predictions about positions in the Premier League. Shakhtar Donetsk 1st... Dynamo Kyiv second... Metalist Kharkiv 3rd... And where were we? Bottom. I didn't feel any pressure taking the reins of a relegation-tipped club. I sort of thrived under it. It was a sweltering day. It could get quite mild on such a summers day here in Zaporizhya and these were one of the days that it did. I got out of the car and made my way to the training ground foyer, where I was greeted by all the players. I knew back when I was a coach for Metalurg Z that all the players were nice lads. Not one loose cannon. So once everyone was ready, we headed out onto the training ground pitch which was about 4 miles from our stadium. First day of training completed and I thought it was a huge success. I loved controlling the training drills and nurturing players, giving them advice about footballing aspects. I wrapped it about 20 minutes earlier than the usual time because I needed to talk to the team in the changing room. "Alright lads. Now listen. We've had a bit of unrest these past few years but rest assured, I will be the man who will lead this club to better things. What I need is one thing though. And that is you, the players, the staff, to co-operate. Looking at you for the first time as a manager, I can see that you have fantastic ability in playing football and I guarantee that the 'R word' won't be spoke about this season. We're too good for that. Now then, let me go through the pre-season schedule. Now all of these games we come up against, we play shit opposition. All of these friendlies are away, too. So I expect full concentration and commitment. On the 23rd of June, we play Girnyk Kryvyi Rih. I'm sure you've heard of them? Good. Well that is on the 23rd of June. Next up we play Avangard Kramatorsk and that is on the 30th June. After that, we have Obolon's reserve..." I sighed. I would know people from this team who are playing. People that I have played with before. Nevertheless, I carried on reading the schedule. "Obolon's reserve team on the 4th of July. Finally, we play the prestigious Shakhtar Football Academy on the 7th July. Any questions? Now, the schedule for the Premier League is in the foyer. They're photocopied so pick one up as you go. Remember, pre-season is all about getting your fitness back and it allows me to pick the best people for the job so I expect you to work hard. Thanks lads. Good training out there."

	Pre-Season First game: Girnyk Kryvyi Rih 3-2 Metalurg Z (Taras Lazarovych, Mykyta Vetrov) It was a deserved win for Rih against a squad of backup and reserve players. Rih took the lead inside 5 minutes with a cross to the far post and met with a volley by Mis'ko at the far post which trundled in. This was the only goal of the first half. The second half saw 4 goals in it and the first of them came in the 55th minute when Rih was given a corner. It was a quite low corner but enough for Goncharenko to get a foot on it to make it 2-0 to Rih. The next goal came in the 67th minute as Metalurg Z's Pisotskyi set up Lazarovych to drill in a shot just inside the box. 2-1 to Rih. Almost immediately after, a defensive error by Metalurg Z's Rudyka allowed Kryvoshey to be through on goal and score with a cool finish to make it 3-1. The final goal of the game came 3 minutes after that when Pisotskyi floated in a ball to Vetrov who tapped into an empty net. And that was the final score. Our MOTM: Eugene Pisotskyi. Two assists for the right-midfielder. Second game:Avangard Kramatorsk 1-3 Metalurg Z (Eugene Pisotskyi, Andrey Varankov, Vadym Petrov) Much better from Metalurg Z today as they enjoyed dominating the game over Avangard. The first goal came bang on the half hour when Yusov lofted a beautiful ball to Pisotskyi who finished with aplomb just inside the box. We doubled our lead 10 minutes later when Varankov latched onto a loose ball, powered past the Avangard defender and placed a shot past the helpless keeper. The second half was quite drab until the 82nd minute when Kon'kov threaded a ball square to Petrov who turned his marker and hit a fantastic shot from about 18 yards out. However, Metalurg Z's chances of a clean sheet was quashed when Shvydkyi hit a fierce shot on the 90 minute mark to make it 3-1. No more than a consolation goal however as the final whistle sounded a minute later. Our MOTM: Dmytro Yusov. Solid game for the man in midfield. Stringing together some good passes and a positive performance from the promising 19-year-old. Third game:Obolon-2 0-1 Metalurg Z (Artur Kas'kov) Quite a boring game here as the only goal came with 10 minutes to go when Artur Kas'kov crossed in a ball from the byline. The cross was tremendously deep and evaded everyone to go into the back of the net. I spoke to him after the game and he jokingly said, "That's the only goal I will score!". Our MOTM: Ante Rozic. A solid performance from the big defender. A day before our final pre-season game, we made our first singing of the season. Lenny, an energetic Brazillian striker signed on a free transfer. He adds to the list of the Brazillian contingent in the Ukrainian Premier League. Fourth game: Shakhtar Football Academy 0-0 Metalurg Z It wasn't a bad game as the scoreline suggests. There were plenty of shots but no-one showed the clinical touch. Our MOTM: Eugene Opanasenko. The right-back proved to be a nuisance down the flank. Pumping some good balls into the box but to no avail.

	Thanks First Game We travelled some 300 miles south-west of Zaporizhya to Odesa to face Chornomorets. I put out the team-sheet for the game and it read; (4-2-3-1) GK: Rudenko RB: Opanasenko CB: Rozic CB: Matheus LB: Stefanello CM: Khalfaoui CM: Jokic AMR: Zadoya AMC: Junior AML: Shturko ST: Belik Substitutes: Shevchenko Rudyka Ibraimi Varankov Nestarov Pisotskyi Lenny It was quite a warm night as I stepped out and shook hands with my counterpart. I felt confident that my team will get a good result here. We kicked off. It was a quiet opening 10 minutes and we looked good on the ball, passing it around comfortably and confidently but we couldn't break the Chornomorets defence. The same could be said about Chornomorets too. It wasn't until the 12th minute when the first real chance happened as a corner was whipped in by Junior and was met by the head of Matheus only to be denied by a smart save from the opposing goalkeeper. However, 10 minutes later, our goalkeeper Rudenko decided to go walkabouts and hastily cleared the ball to the Chornomorets player Leo Matos who, from about 55 yards, had an easy chance to score in an open net and he did. 1-0 Chornomorets. The game dimmed till half-time and was still dimmed until the 68th minute when Chornomorets' striker Didenko stormed past the defender and lashed a shot at goal but Rudenko pulled off a fantastic stop. A few minutes later though, Zubeyko came across to the goal line and was brought down inside the penalty area by Stefanello. A little harsh in my book but the penalty was given nevertheless. Didenko ran up and hit a poor shot but evaded Rudenko. 2-0 down. With 77 minutes gone, Metalurgs Z started an incisive counter-attack which ended in Rudyka, the substitute, threading a perfect ball to Junior who took the ball down and placed a sublime shot past the goalkeeper. 2-1. With 5 minutes to go, Chornomorets had a chance to end the game once and for all when Didenko's poor header was easily met by Rudenko. We tried our best to get an equaliser but we couldn't. FINAL SCORE: Chornomorets 2-1 Metalurg Z I wasn't too disheartened with the final score in the end. We tried our best in our first game back in the top flight and gave a good effort. Our MOTM: Matheus. Our centre-back had a great game. Unlucky with the 2 goals and he could have scored one himself.

	Metalurg Z have been very active over the past few days in the transfer market. First of all, Metalurg Z's right-midfielder, Maxim Skorokhodov has been sold to FC Odesa for a total of £60,000. Also, Metalurg Z's on-loan Macedonian, Besart Ibraimi, has had his loan terminated. However, Metalurg Z have signed Mozambique international Josemar Machaisse for a fee of £300,000.

	July Review After the defeat against Chornomorets, we played 2 more games in July. 21.7.12 - Metalurg Z 2-0 Volyn Lutsk (Olexiy Belik, Lenny PEN) Extremely happy with this win. We controlled the game throughout and even though Belik went off with a knock, Lenny filled in and put in a great shift. Our MOTM: Ante Rozic. Another solid performance. 28.7.12 Metalist Kharkiv 3-0 Metalurg Z I was pessimistic before this game and rightly so. I can expect to see scorelines like this against bigger clubs this season. Our MOTM: Junior. He did his best to make an impact. Metalurg Z have dipped their toes into the transfer window once again. This time, they've snapped up 17-year-old Kyrgyz Ahletdin Israilov on a free transfer from Dynamo Kyiv. He will be placed into the under-21 team and is already tipped to be a star in the Ukranian League.

	August Review We played 4 games in August. First, it was a home game against Zorya Lugansk, then it was a trip to Illichivets Mariupol. After that, we entertained Goverla and in the final game of the month, we faced Arsenal Kyiv away from home. Metalurg Z 2-1 Zorya (Junior - 2) A good win for us against a poor Zorya team. Junior's goal in the 13th minute was cancelled out by Boli's goal in the 28th minute. Junior however wrapped up the game in the 66th minute. Our MOTM: Junior. A brace to his name plus a positive performance in other aspects of the game. Illichivets 3-0 Metalurg Z A goal that had suspicions of offside set the tone in this disappointing defeat. A brace from Ruslan Fomin and a goal from Vitaliy Fedotov inspired Illichivets to victory and left us without a win away from home this season. Our MOTM: Yuriy Shturko. The winger tried to conjure up something by making some good runs and floating in dangerous crosses. Metalurg Z 2-2 Goverla (Olexiy Belik, Eugene Pisotskyi) Goverla took the lead inside a minute with Lysenko's effort. We didn't respond until the 63rd minute when Olexiy Belik equalized for Metalurg Z. Pisotskyi then made it 2-1 in the 80th minute but 8 minutes later, Goverla equalized to snatch a point from the Slavutych-Arena. Our MOTM: Olexiy Belik. Scored a goal and unlucky not to have scored more. Arsenal Kyiv 2-3 Metalurg Z (Olexiy Belik, Yuriy Shturko - 2) Probably the best performance of the season so far. We found ourselves 1-0 down inside 12 minutes but then Belik scored in the 26th minute to make it 1-1. However, Arsenal Kyiv took the lead again on the stroke of half time. But 4 minutes after the restart, Shturko grabbed a goal to make it 2-2. Then 2 minutes later, he then scored again to make it 3-2 to Metalurg Z. A fantastic double-salvo from the left-winger. It remained 3-2 to us. Our MOTM: Yuriy Shturko. A vital brace to his name to give us our first away win of the season. We are 8th in the Ukrainian Premier League with 10 points. 1st are Shakhtar Donetsk with 7 wins out of 7 and with 21 points, 2nd are Dnipro with 18 points and in third place are Chornomorets with 17 points.
