Writing by Hand

I was just having a conversation with someone and it dawned upon me that it's probably been absolutely ages since I last wrote something by hand. These days pretty much everything I do is computer-based: note-taking, mind mapping for projects, all that sorta stuff. There's a plethora of applications available that make using a pen and paper less and less desirable for me.

Is there still a place for pen and paper in your life? When was the last time you wrote something? Do you still feel there's a place for it in our ever computer-reliant society?

I still take notes using a pen and paper during class. The vast majority of people prefer to use their laptop, but I need to write information down, helps me retain the material better. Plus, a paper notebook is a lot more accessible in variety of different locations than a laptop, imo.

Pretty much this. Typing is such a rapid activity that it makes learning and retaining information difficult. I feel that handwriting my notes, although slower, allows me to understand and analyze whatever I'm reading/studying. Probably because handwriting is a more deliberate, careful activity than typing is, where your thoughts can be recorded and deleted in an instant.

Unless it's English. If I'm writing a paper, I have to type it. Everything else though is basically handwritten for me. I dunno, I feel that doing math/science homework by hand gives you a feeling of actually "doing it," you know... getting gritty with a hard Calculus problem and wrestling with it... I wouldn't feel that through a computer. In general, learning and studying through a monitor feels kind of detached (as opposed to learning through a textbook.) It's more of a personal preference, though.

Well it's been three years since I've had a class that involved writing by hand. I don't mind it but I admit I don't have the neatest writing. It's really rare I need to write by hand anymore. Or write anything at all now that I think of it. Yesterday I had to write an artists statement, which I rarely do anyway, and as I finished writing it I remember thinking I've been so out of touch with formal writing that my artist statement really sucks balls.

I actually saw an article about this in the papers a while back. Studies have shown that adults are writing less and less and it's something like 2 weeks on average that people go without writing anything down. I've been off college for months now but I make sure I write silly little things every day because I also know that there's a direct correlation between how often you write and how bad your handwriting is. I already have the worst handwriting in the world so I've been trying to stay in practice.

I have a little notebook that I write my to do list and my reminders in as well as keeping note of important numbers or facts that I need to remember. It keeps me in practice I guess and I kind of enjoy it. It's more fun than typing but it takes much longer.

Having absolutely shit handwriting usually legible only to me (even then sometimes I can struggle to read my own handwriting) I prefer to have everything typed up. I find I type quicker than I can write by hand, whilst I do sometimes make mistakes when typing, it can easily be removed and corrected, you can choose a font that is clear enough to be read by everyone.

That isn't to say that I won't use pen and paper where needed, in fact, most notetaking is done on paper by me (in terms of just jotting stuff down and plotting them)... that is mainly because doing it by a mouse is even harder though.

I only use pen and paper to take notes in college because the teachers are so archaic they don't let you use laptops or tablets.

I love notepads for some reason though. I have bought a bunch of moleskines, notebooks, and notepads, but I never have anything to write in them.

I have to scribble down notes all the time at work, and i still use pen and paper in classes so yeah, i'm still using pens regularly :L I feel safer if dates and things are written on paper rather than saved on my phone or whatever also. No idea why
