Second chances

The thread in loungin' about graduating reminded me of this. So a year or two ago this kid I knew got kicked out of school, I'm not even sure why. I think his grades were too low or something. I found out a week or so ago he tried to get back into school so he could get his diploma. I don't think he lives with his parents or anything so he was probably trying to get back in because he wanted to, and not because of someone else.
Long story short the principle told him he couldn't come back. Do you think people like him should get a second chance?

I thought it was ridiculous he didn't get back in to school. A lot of other schools have programs to help people finish high school after they turn 18 and I'm sure they could have worked something out.

If the kid was genuinely struggling but wanted to succeed then yes, providing the right support is there for him. If he left of his volition because he just CBA'd with, then no.

Further education shouldn't be done purely for the sake of it but also because you want to. If he had the chance but chucked it away because he didn't put in the effort and slacked off then no. There will be other people around who want to succeed but can't because of other reasons, then a second chance should be given.

If the kid wants to go back and learn, isn't there another school nearby willing to take him in?

Education should be provided to all those in need and willing to learn it. Education is what allows problems to be sorted through words rather than fists. Education is the system that every person in the modern world should have access to. Education however, should not be given to those who are ignorant and lazy. Education is a beautiful thing, but is wasted on too many and not given to those in actual need of it. He got kicked out because his grades were too low? Probably means that the teachers weren't helping him and giving him the support he needed. Not allowed in for the second chance? This place has little to no compassion. He probably had the aptitude to learn but wasn't given a fair chance. But life isn't fair. Life is a bitch. That is all .

Sure. He deserves another chance. People who at least make an effort for what they have done wrong in the past always deserve another go. If he didn't care and continued on that way then no, but he's making a go of it now, so good on him.
