EricF, I recently purchased Mastodon's
Blood Mountain, and it reminded me of something I absolutely despise in music.
Why, WHY, do musicians allow for their albums to end with two songs on one track separated by over 5 MINUTES of SILENCE?! In Mastodon's case, it's 20 minutes, just to hear Josh Homme read a joke. Our Lady Peace did it on
Spiritual Machines leading into RK's discussion with Molly. It's goddamn aggravating. I hate it when bands do this, it's a waste of track space and it's terribly inconvenient for setlisting.
This is better mastered and appreciated in the works of Tool (
Undertow), Silversun Pickups (
Pikul), and Coheed and Cambria (
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3). On those albums, at least the silence was a number of separate tracks varying in length to effectively separate the 'secret song' from the rest of the album.
