Cheating

I'm not talking about cheating on a game or swindling, I'm talking about infidelity.

I was always taught that cheating was wrong and to this day it is a belief in which I don't allow any leeway. My policy is "one and done" as in if a guy wants to cheat in any way, whether it be a kiss or sex, that's it; I'll never consider a second chance. I would rather he be completely honest and break up with me first then go off and do whatever. As a result, whoever I'm with should expect the same honesty.

Times have changed and it seems cheating has become much more common. What defines cheating for you? Do you allow any excuses like intoxication or side effects of drugs? Have you ever cheated/been cheated on? If you'd like to discuss online relationships as well, feel free.

For me, adultery is a kiss or emotional infidelity. This is something my partner and I discussed early on, to be sure we are on the same page. Like you, Fluidity, that's not something I'd offer a second chance for.

I remember reading an article in a magazine, years back, in which they'd asked readers to sent in letters about adultery. At least two people said something along the lines of "if they don't know, it can't hurt them. Who says you only get one partner?"

Have to say, that really pissed me off. It's generally presumed that, if you're in a relationship, you've agreed to the one-partner proviso. If you want to change that, fine, but discuss it with your partner first.

It's definitely not something I'd tolerate. A kiss is something that I might forgive once...it depends on the circumstances. The "I was drunk" excuse is such bullshit though. I think that if you know you're a sloppy/horny drunk, then you should control your drinking when you're out without your significant other. Don't give yourself the opportunity to cheat. It's that simple.

Traydor, holy shit, that would infuriate me. People who believe that lack both integrity and honesty in my opinion. Definitely not the kind of guy that I'd be okay dating. Like Fluidity, I'd much rather the guy break up with me and then have sex/hookup/etc with another person.

Question: how do you guys feel about friends who cheat?

As far as I know, none of my friends have ever cheated on their boyfriends/girlfriends. I don't know if I'd go up to the other person and be like "Hey, your boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating on you," but I definitely wouldn't look the other way if I knew they were doing that.

I was once out with a close friend of mine, several years ago now. Her partner dropped us off at a club, and then went home for the evening until it was time to pick us up. We were there a few hours, and then I went to the bathroom, came back, and she was making out with a total stranger.

I had no idea what to do. Adultery is strongly against my personal standards, but I was pissed, in a strange city, with no way to get home or to safety without her (I was young and broke; older and richer, I could have gotten out of the whole mess by getting a taxi to a hotel). All of my principles said I should tell her partner, but it was a difficult decision for me to make. She's one of my closest friends. We've known each other since we were thirteen. She was one of the first people I came out to. I didn't want to throw all that way by telling her partner without at least talking to her. I needed to think about it, sober.

I'm not proud of how I acted. I spent the night at their flat without telling her partner, then desperately tried to pretend that the situation wasn't happening. Six months later, it turns out they'd both had affairs left and right; she found out when he gave her an STD. I was glad I hadn't gotten into the whole mess, but our friendship has never been the same.

I would ask you to reserve judgement on my friend here. I've specifically told you a story of the worst thing she ever did, as far as I'm concerned; please don't use that as an excuse to assume that this is average, or as an excuse to insult her.

I personally wouldn't care if a girl friend of mine cheated, although none mine ever have and I doubt ever will. Don't get me wrong I don't agree with it, but for how much guys go on about sleeping around and how they talk about women in a such a piggish way, I have a lot less sympathy for them as a gender. If it's a guy friend of mine it'll bother me more just because I'll feel bad for the girl. It's wrong, I know. :P

Presumably, their partner knows that they're a porn star, in which case, presumably, they're okay with it.

If they don't know...well, I can understand why that's not something you'd want to reveal right away, but it seems like the kind of thing you should mention by the time it becomes exclusive.
