discussion B.O.W. Design 101 - Always leave a fatal weakspot

The first thing you should know when creating a Bio Organic Weapon, is that no matter how strong it is, there always, ALWAYS, has to be a weak spot to kill it quickly.

Take project Ustanak, for example. It can take all kinds of punishment from all kinds of weapons, but it can be easily disposed of by punching it...

I, for one, would like to see something other than the bosses with highlighted, or otherwise obvious weakspots. Or bosses like Ustanak.. The "fight" with Jake after watching it eat all sorts of lead and/ or explosive cereal... Need I say more?

I say, if you gotta have weakspots on your B.O.W, don't make it so apparent.

Nothing gets on nerves worse than fighting a BOW for an hour(hardly ever happens) and not knowing wth to do to dispatch it. You kinda need to have a hint of what to do. Sure, I'm all for making it obscure to a point, but really I don't see a problem with it.

Well, just because an enemy/boss doesn't have a weak spot, doesn't mean they're invincible. They could just have damage being equal no matter where you hit them.

However, i do think that RE bosses are pretty basic, especially when compared to the standard RE enemies. Shooting a normal enemy in different body parts would produce a different reaction, all the way back from RE4. Yet they have yet to do the same for bosses. And if you think about it, ganados/majini/j'avo don't have glowing orange heads....but their heads ARE their weakspots. The same can be applied to bosses.

So say for instance, a flying boss (think Popokarimu from RE5 maybe). No glowy weakspots, however shooting different body parts would make the fight easier in different ways. Shooting the wings wouldn't do too much damage, but would reduce the beasts flying abilities and so make it a lot easier to handle (or maybe temporarily stop it from flying or something). Shooting it's eyes - a really hard target to aim for - would be hugely beneficial because then it wouldn't be able to see (or again, only temporarily blind, but still of great use). Etc etc.

They can have weak spots so the player has something to look for and some challenge trying to figure it out, it just doesn't have to be that apparent. Think Demon/Darks Souls. Almost all the bosses have weaknesses but they don't glow and aren't explained by someone else right at the beginning of the fight "You should aim for the wings.. I know, they are bright orange.." For example one boss has a weakness to fire, the only pointer is that it looks almost like a tree. But he doesn't have a sign of a bear holding a cigarette to show you that.
