account My account number is higher than the number of people on the site?

Could be because it might only count for legit accounts, like Advertisers accounts might be disabled, and probably wont be listed as a current totall amount of legit members.

And some accounts might get merged with an original account, and some accounts get deleted when someone takes their name respectfully.

So, numbers go up and down, but the regristration of one's account still stands.

So why don't they disable their account numbers and leave them for reuse?

I think it might mess up some member's numbers.
Like mine, if one account that joined before me, and it got deleted, every account, including me, that joined after his, would have to go one member number down, I think it would somehow mess up the system perhaps.
Because the ID of a member has more functions then just a number display, like with avatars, if you copy someone's avatar and paste it into an image url code, then that's connected, and would change when the member itself change it, so a function somehting like that.

I'm just guessing that the current amount of members is just legit accounts, but some of those could be advertisers being disabled/permabanned, accounts that were being merged or deleted, maybe some of those accounts were never used or activated, or maybe are disbandoned.

Who knows it could also be a mistake, and that the display isn't accurate in the amount of members being registered, but my guess is mainly that it is for legit accounts, because some accounts I have on my friend list wont show up, because they are either disabled or haven't logged in for a loooong time, or never again.
So, I'm kinda basing it on something that the system counts on to keep and to remove for display somehow.

But I'm just guessing.

This also doesn't take into consideration accounts that weren't activated or had 0 posts made on them. Think of the memberid attached to the accounts as a tally of accounts created since day 1 not as a number that can just fluctuate as desired.

Adjusting dynamically would be a nightmare in the system, your account isn't just your account it's an entry in the system and it means we'd shuffle 400k entries around just to be "tidy". No thanks there.
