I have a feeling I've asked this before, but why is replying in a thread in which the most recent post was a year ago taken extremely seriously? You're only trying to continue the discussion and it's just a post, so why do people tell you off?

Most likely the discussion had already ended. If you want to continue a similar discussion, it would probably be best to make a new thread about it.
But it also depends on how active a forum is, as some forums have threads on the first page the are from over a year back.

It's really all depends on the situation in question. So, it's up to you.
If someone says, "You shouldn't have bumped that thread." Then you can learn from that and not do it in the future.

Bumping has always been a complex issue 'round these crazy places.

I don't know why people go apesh*t when a thread gets bumped with legit content of value.

I don't know why newb mods close bumped threads that were bumped with a post with a lot of value.

Then you have the members who go apesh*t when a new member bumps a thread up. Last I checked Bumping Threads wasn't a registered cause of death.
