The return of the EZ Swing and inadvertent Wall Crawling

So, somehow people are already playing and completing this game. Im not sure how, but the general concensus with the gameplay is that some gripes are found in these two areas.

Swinging is not very advanced. You have your basic pull R2 to swing, and release to let go as always, but apparently the ability to ride a single webline for as long as you want, or even hang upside down from it is gone. It is said that holding down the R2 constantly just has Spider-Man auto swinging. Think of holding down the gas on a racing game here. Not sure that I like that, but Ill wait until I play before I judge.

Wall Crawling, especially indoors can be irritating. As there is no button required to access wall crawling, if you brush up against something too strongly, you stick to it. This was a BIG problem in Shattered Dimensions with their cramped level designs, Kinda wish they had implemented a button command to initiate the wall crawl, but again Ill wait until Ive played to comment further, after I see just how much of an issue it really is.


Combat however has been revered by all who have played the game, which is really exciting.

My take on this Chirovette is that Beenox has shown that it has listened to the fans of Spider-Man games. I feel like the ground up rebuild of this Spider-Man game is evidence of that, and perhaps there were just too many things to do from scratch, without brining in some things they had already done before.

In some gameplay footage Ive seen, but has since gotten the ultimate smackdown from Activision in the form of complete Youtube channel obliteration, the swinging system reminds me a great deal of the swinging in the very first Spider-Man The Movie game in some areas.

You can literally swing from the sky, far above the tallest buildings. So high in fact that you actually have some clouds forming that you can swing through. This can be dealt with by simply staying down by the buildings, but its still going to be there in the back of your mind that you can literally fire a webline every single time the trigger is pulled. You just hold it down, and steer, and thats Spidey's basic mode of travel.

Wall Crawling inadvertently should only be a problem in really tight spaces. In Shattered Dimensions, some of the actual pathways through the level were so narrow you could actually brush the wall and end up sticking. Very aggravating. But some indoor environments Ive seen look pretty open.

Besides that, this game has the escape button so that you can instantly get out of a jam if need be, by using the Web Escape. SD didnt have that, so you could be taking gunfire the whole time youre trying to reorient the camera and get back down off of the wall, and then get mobile again.

I feel like they will be watching the responses of gamers when they play this game, and in the games that follow, we could see improvements to advance the swinging, and a wall crawl on command system.

Oh, and if all ten (per the strategy guide) of the alternate suits are as bad as the first five that have been revealed, maybe they will take suggestions in that area as well. I mean, youve got three alt suits that basicly look almost identical to another suit in some form.

Movie with no belt, or with belt, and then Negative Zone is pretty much the SM3 Black suit. Thats two wasted slots for suits with far better variation.

Anyway, the fact that Beenox has been willing to listen to fans and take their work in another direction gives me a good feeling that whatever misses the mark in this game, they will work on in the future. I believe that the committment to making the best Spider-Man game they can is there.

Its definately going to be wierd not to have the ability to boost the speed of the swing. I read that using LT while swinging will cause you to gain height, which is cool that you can still have some degree of control over that.

One of my favorite things to do in previous games though, was to ride that one webline for a ridiculous amount of time. Hell, maybe even do a loop if I felt like it. Holding onto the web on this game basicly takes you to the absolute apex of the swing and then he will automaticly let go and start another swing.

However, I did read some commentary from a guy who played deep into the game and he said that we would all appreciate this swinging style when we got into the aerial battles which are said to get pretty gnarly at some points. He described one attack from one of the aerial HK's as having a blast that has a one block radius, and being able to always know theres going to be a webline and being able to reach destinations with pinpoint accuracy are huge elements in making these aerial chases and battles as epic as we've ever seen.

Yeah, ha, I have a feeling i'm going to forget what game i'm playing in really intense moments and try to hit R2, hold X and then L2 and get myself killed. That is definitely going to take some getting used to.
