The large missions like the bank in Vice City and the casino in San Andreas that have multiple brilliant missions to set them up are totally bad-ass.

Were it up to me, the entire storyline would be like that. The storyline would be a pyramid of many smaller above style heists and they'd lead up to a massive action-packed uber-mission that would take up an entire day. Obviously there should be multiple save points throughout the uber-badass-mission, but every minute of it would be satisfying, as you'd see all the tens of little missions and lower level heists paying off in the most complicated and action packed heist ever.

YES i agree THE 3 LEAF CLOVER WAS GREAT in its own right BUT

i TOTALY LOVED the bank job in vice city the hole set up was AWSM

from helping Phill Casady & Then having to race the nerdy dork SO HE'D b the driver

THEN OMFG the bank job i LOVED the way the safe cracker did his thing & you had to check on your team

lets hope the bank jobs in GTA5 are as good as the one in vice city

Heist missions have been some of the best GTA has ever produced for me. The bank robbery from GTA:VC was great fun and Breaking the Bank at Caligula's was probably my favourite from GTA:SA. Both of those missions themselves were great fun, but what makes both of those for me is the sequence of missions beforehand. You've got to get through those and the various elements of planning the heist that they prepare you for that make the whole thing feel great when you pull off the final mission because you've had to work for it. It's not like someone's just given you a gang and arbitrarily said "Go rob this bank".

That and the style of game GTA is lends itself pretty well to this sort of thing. I wouldn't want every mission to be one of these, but a story arc (or part of one) where you're going down this route is amazing if done well, and obviously gives room to reference a bunch of films if they so desire.
