 25 and Still Jobless – January Results After such a poor performance against Forest Green, I had to say that I was hoping for a good response, but considering who our next opponents where, I could honestly say that I was not expecting it.  Luton Town, I fear Luton as much as I hate to admit it, especially since I’m just the lowly manager of Bath City, who has been linked with only the jobs of Lincoln City and Bath City, teams that are now fighting just to stay in this league at the moment. So facing a team like Luton, who are currently in 5th place, need to be respected. The media were also writing us off easily as well, something that I wasn’t surprised about either. However, when we went behind early on, thanks to a Gleeson goal, I had already started to write my team off, when they suddenly decided to produce a sensational response, when Phillips got an equalizer almost instantly. After that goal, we started to take control of the game, and we were rewarded when Preece finally got the goal that gave us the lead for the first time in the match. We were also awarded a penalty, which I honestly thought was a slightly harsh decision, but I didn’t say anything, I just accepted my luck. Phillips put the ball in the back of the net from the spot. In the second half, not much really happened, apart from an unfortunate injury to Marley Watkins, and me experimenting with the formations, going into a 3-5-2 formation because of the injury. The match ended with Bath winning the match by 3-1, which ended my fears, and caused me nothing but overwhelming joy. The result moved us up to 19th and 5 points clear of the drop zone. Cup and other things. The next game we were involved in was the F.A Trophy 2nd round match against Sutton United, a game that I expected my team to win against, anything less was unacceptable in my eyes. We started the game very well, and had numerous chances to take the lead, but we had a red card in the form of Nathan Thompson, who stupidly got himself sent off because of a second yellow card for a really reckless challenge just before half time. In the second half, Cook gave us the lead thanks to a cross from substitute Simpson. Sutton Utd started to take control of the possession because of their extra man advantage, but in the end we held out for a win. F.A. Trophy 2nd Round – 14/01/12 Bath 1 – 0 Sutton Utd Cook (52), Thompson Sent off (40) | 8 Shots 3 3 On Target 1 44% Possession 56% 4 Yellow Cards 4 1 Red Cards 0 Mom – Sam Page (Sutton Utd)  The game against Ebbsfleet I had to be cautious about, mostly because I know that we could win this game, but I don’t want to do what I did against Forest Green and get too confident against the side that are currently in 23rd place. However, we just never got going. Ebbsfleet took the lead thanks to Lorraine, before Marwa made it 2-0 before half-time. Things didn’t improve after half-time, in fact they got worse. Fakinos scored a beauty to make it 3-0, before Ginty soon scored shortly afterwards, and Ahamed finished things off before to end a horrible game. We had lost by 5-0, this was my worse ever result so far as a manager, something that made me cringe whenever I looked at the scoreline. The performance was just so poor that I wanted to run away and cry, but I in the end, just let the players know that they had let me down, big time. It was disgusting to watch, it really was. I was embarrassed because it was the team that I had selected, this result almost made me want to leave there and then. However, I still have 5 months left on the contract, and I would honour it until the bitter end. So when I was tasked with facing Wrexham, who are currently top of the table, this daunting task was made a reality. But yet, the media were predicting that this game would end up being a draw, for reasons that I could not yet understand, so I ended up just hoping for the best. In the game, we ended up being the weaker side, so I wasn’t surprised by the fact that we ended up going behind thanks to a Rhys Bennett goal in the first half. In the second half, we ended up hitting the woodwork, but Wrexham returned the favour by hitting the bar as well. In the end, we deserved to lose the match, but the result ended up making us drop into the bottom four, the relegation zones. Blue Square Premier – 21/01/12 Bath 0 – 1 Wrexham | Bennett (39) 5 Shots 9 2 On Target 3 49% Possession 51% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 Mom – Rhys Bennett (Wrexham)  Unlike the game beforehand, where we ended up facing the side that was top of the table, this time we were going to be facing off against the side that were bottom of the table, in the form of Tamworth. We were predicted by the media to do well in this game, and we didn’t disappoint by starting the game strongly by having most of the possession and chances, but yet, we couldn’t find the back of the next in the first half. It was only in the second half that we found the back of the net, after having hit the crossbar, in the form of Marley Watkins, who had been injured in the first match of the month and was now scoring his first goal of the season, before Gerthin Jones scored to make it 2-0 before the end with a header. However, Tamworth gave us a slight scare by scoring in injury time thanks to Lee Weemes, but it was far too late for them to stop us from winning and getting back out of the relegation zones. Also another small note to add, I have not made any signings during the Window, and two players I had on loan have now gone back to their clubs, declaring that they had hated their time at Bath City ... the whining brats. 25 and Still Jobless – February’s Results, part 1  After our performance against Tamworth, I could be told not to expect too much, which I didn’t. However, considering my next opponents were against Lincoln City, who were also struggling in the drop zones, making this a relegation clash, as well as the only other side that I had been linked with beforehand as well. The media predicted that this game would be a Lincoln win, saying that we couldn’t get a win out of anyway at the moment, which bemused me. This made me desperate to prove the media wrong. The day itself was being covered in snow, but we were still playing, showing that we could have snow, but still play. Take notes teams from the upper leagues, take notes. Things we decent at first, though with the Counter strategy for a reason, I felt slightly confident, until Burnell got himself sent off with a straight red for a horrific tackle, thankfully the player wasn’t hurt as badly as he could have been. However, Lincoln soon took the lead through Lambe. In the second half, El Haimour made it 2-0 with his first ever Lincoln City goal. Stonehouse did, however pull a goal back for us, giving me hope. But it wasn’t enough, we still lost the game, thankfully we didn’t drop into the bottom four. A. Trophy 3rd round match at Salisbury was the next game, which would also mark my 15th game in charge of Bath. However, after the match, I will be deciding whether or not I should stay on as the manager, due to the stress and annoyance that had been building up as of late, because of the poor performances and worsening finances. The media predicted a Bath in what they believed would be a close encounter. I wanted to actually prove them right this time. Salisbury actually got the first chance, and hit the post, and started to have the better of the possession. However, things looked to have taken a turn for the worse when Jones gave away a penalty, which none other than Michael Ricketts stepped up to take ... and proceeded to miss. Garner ended up saving the penalty. In the second half, Preece was able to give us the lead with a header, much to my relief. However, Salisbury equalized through Fitchett, as a result of a free kick that had been awarded because of a dive. I was livid and made my feelings known to the 4th official, who told me to calm down. Salisbury ended up taking the lead through an Garner own goal, much to his humiliation, before Graham in the end made it 3-1, resulting in me losing my temper once again, because of my team’s poor defending. In the end, Bath City of the Blue Square Premier ended up losing to Salisbury of the Blue Square South, by 3-1, how frustrated I was. F. A. 25 and Still Jobless – February’s Results, part 2  After asking for some expect opinions about whether or not I should stay as the Bath City boss, I decided that it would be for the best not to quit now, for 3 months is perhaps a little too soon, and I may not have had the best part of the season yet. Our next game was against Barrow, a place that I had relatives in from what I had been told, but I was unable to see them. However, they weren’t on my mind, the thing that was more important to me, was the fact that I had to get a win against the side from up north. The media had made them the favourites for the match, so I couldn’t be too disappointed with a poor result, however, I wanted that all important win. We want off to the best of starts when Jamie Cook put us in front thanks to an easy tap in from 7 yards out, before Murray made it 2-0 14 minutes later after getting on the end of Watkins cross. Preece then made it 3-0 in the 34th minute with another tap-in. John-Lewis got a goal back, before Jones scored for Barrow as well, 2 goals in 3 mins, causing me to get nervous at 3-2. However we held on for that important win. Blue Square Premier – 11/02/12 Barrow 2 – 3 Bath John-Lewis (70), Jones (73) | Cook (10), Murray (24), Preece (34) 14 Shots 8 4 On Target 5 52% Possession 48% 1 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Andrai Jones (Barrow)  The next game we had was against a side in the playoffs, when we faced off against Grimsby, the media rightfully made them the favourites for the match. However, we stunned them when we took the lead thanks to Scott Murray in the 9th minutes. Edmundsson then equalized for Grimsby, starting off a flurry of goals, as we scored 2 minutes later thanks to Phillips, who had ended his 600 minute goal drought, only for us to be pegged back by Grimsby again, this time thanks to Anthony Elding, 2 minutes later. The second half was hardly as exciting and nothing much really happened after that, however, Simpson unfortunately got injured in injury time much to our displeasure. This match was ironically enough my first draw as Bath City manager. Blue Square Premier – 14/02/12 Grimsby 2 – 2 Bath Edmundsson (28), Elding (32) | Murray (9), Phillips (30) 8 Shots 8 3 On Target 5 51% Possession 49% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Scott Murray (Bath)  Our next game was against a Hayes and Yeading side that had fallen down the table and were now only 3 places above us. The media had gone ahead and predicted that we would be the victorious team, once again. I had no problem with making sure that this prediction proved to be correct. We started well thanks to Phillips opening the scoring. However, M’Boma got the equalizer 8 minutes before half time because of some poor defending. In the end, Cook gave us the lead once more with what proved to be the winner, something that I had no problem with cheering about. Who could blame me? 10 points in the last 5 league games if you include the Tamworth game from last month. Another interesting fact you might be interested in hearing is that the Luton Town boss, Gary Brabin got sacked by Luton on this day as well. How weird is that? Blue Square Premier – 18/02/12 Bath 2 – 1 Hayes and Yeading Phillips (14), Cook (61) | M’Boma (37) 9 Shots 8 4 On Target 4 54% Possession 46% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Jamie Cook (Bath)  Before the next game, I had signed a brand new scout, who had been recommended by one of my own staff, Paul Arkle was his name and when he arrived to the club, he immediately recommended that I signed a 21 year old Australian goalkeeper known as Dean Bouzanis. The goalkeeper had been released by Liverpool earlier in the summer, and no-one had picked him up and allowed him to join or even offer the boy a contract. I ended up making the boy, my first signing as Bath City manager, took my time about it, didn’t I? The next game that we were to be involved in was the match against Darlington, which we were predicted as the favourites for against the side that had the 5th best defence in the league and was only as far down as 15th because of how bad their strikers had been so far this season. We started off the game like the favourites, with Rollo hitting the post from his freekick, which had the keeper scrambling in an attempt to get to it. In the end, it was Cook that gave us the lead. In the second half, it took us just 6 minutes to make it 2-0 with a great volley for his 25th Bath City goal. In the 82nd minute, Canham, who had come on from the bench made it 3-0. It finished 3-0 and this had been my best win yet which moved us up to 19th, only to go back down to 20th again because Hayes and Yeading got a draw in their spare game in hand. 25 and Still Jobless – March 2012 Results  After such a great month, which ended with such a great result against Darlington (sorry Darlington fans), we have now gotten ourselves on a good run and are hoping to make it three wins in a row for the very first time under my reign. Now we were facing off against 4th place Cambridge, I would be happy with just a single point, however, the media predicted that we would be the slight favourites. In the match itself, both sides had chances, but Cambridge had the possession in a really boring first half. However, Phillips suddenly gave us a lead, after a sudden counterattack by my side ripped the defence apart, allowing him to find his way through to shot. Unfortunately for both Phillips and us, he ended up going off injured with 10 minutes to go. We ended up winning 1-0, getting 3 wins in a row for the first time under my reign, as well as moving up to 18th, the highest we had ever been in my reign as well. We were considered the favourites for the match, meaning that I was hoping for a win. A Deasy own goal gave us the lead early on, before Murray made it 2-0 with a superb volley from a tight angle. The match ended up finishing 2-0 and we moved up to 17th with this win. This was also a run of 6 games without defeat, a club record. Blue Square Premier – 06/03/12 Bath 2 – 0 Gateshead Deasy og (17), Murray (29) | 8 Shots 7 4 On Target 2 49% Possession 51% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Scott Murray (Bath)  Going up against the side that we could be equal on points with was special to me, especially since the team we were facing were in 13th. Against Kidderminster this was the case and we were now a mid-table side. For the match we were considered the favourites and Murray gave us the lead to help prove why in the second half, before Cook ended up making it 2-0. That was the way that the match ended and we moved up to 15th because of our 5th straight win. Blue Square Premier – 10/03/12 Kidderminster 0 – 2 Bath | Murray (49), Cook (62) 15 Shots 11 7 On Target 5 54% Possession 46% 0 Yellow Cards 2 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Gethin Jones (Bath)  Before our next league game, I had decided to attend a friendly match, which happened to be between my under 18s and some kids who were hoping to end up forcing themselves into my next squads, mostly because I wanted to take a closer look at some kids who could potentially become stars for the future. However, after watching the match, I ended up finding myself facing off against AFC Telford where we were predicted to easily win against the against the side we could find ourselves just 2 points behind the 11th placed side. We had the chances, but it was Telford who hit the post first, causing a bit of a scare. However, Murray gave us the lead that we truly deserved before half time, and if in doubt, Preece ended up scoring as well before the end of the second half to give us the 2-0 score line that it finished as in the end. This result led us to going up to 13th because of our 6th win in a row. Blue Square Premier – 17/03/12 Bath 2 – 0 AFC Telford Murray (42), Preece (87) | 18 Shots 3 4 On Target 0 54% Possession 46% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Mark Preece (Bath)  Normally when you had a game where the side in 13th is facing the side in 2nd, you would instantly go for the side in 2nd wouldn’t you? Well, the media had gone ahead and predicted that the side in 2nd would lose this match, in other words, they have gone and predicted that Bath City, would go on and beat York City. Strange isn’t it? Who knows how the media works these days, maybe it was because of our really good form. However after some domination of possession, we took the lead thanks to Phillips, and we also had a chance to make it 2-0 because Phillips won use a penalty, however, Russell failed to score it, after hitting the post. In the end, we were punished because of that miss, when Henderson got an equalizer for York. The match ended 1-1, and our unbeaten run stretched to 9 games. Blue Square Premier – 24/03/12 Bath 1 – 1 York Phillips (31), Russell m/p (60)| Henderson (80) 7 Shots 9 2 On Target 3 51% Possession 49% 0 Yellow Cards 2 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Jim Rollo (c)  Having dropped to 15th because of games being played on the day before (the 23rd if you haven’t realized yet), we were more than eager to get another win against 5th placed Newport. However, before the match could even start, it was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. How disappointing that was. Blue Square Premier – 28/03/12 Newport P – P Bath  Facing off against another team that were in 2nd, in the form of Fleetwood, and being the favourites for the match, must become a little weird after while, right? Not for me it isn’t, especially after how well we had been doing against the top teams lately. We were hoping to end March undefeated to give ourselves a good boost. However, it was Fleet wood that took the lead thanks to an own goal from Bouzanis, after the ball came off the post and hit his back to go in. We nearly got an equalizer only to hit the bar in response. However, Phillips made it 1-1 in the second half, only for us to end up losing thanks to a Donnelly goal that made it 2-1. Preece also ended up getting himself sent off before the end, ending our unbeaten run that had been going since the beginning of February. This result caused us to slip down to 17th. 25 and Still Jobless – April 2012 Results and an Offer Our first game of what would be the last month of the football season in the Blue Square Premier was the game that just happened to be postponed last month, due to a waterlogged pitch. Newport County, who were hoping to finish in the playoffs this season, they were obviously the favourites for the match. Newport County dominated the possession in the first half, but only scored their first goal literally seconds into the 2nd half thanks to Rose, before unfortunately Stonehouse scored an own goal. However, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed with the defeat, especially when the team seemed to love diving in order to win free kicks. Blue Square Premier – 04/04/12 Newport 2 – 0 Bath Rose (46), Stonehouse og (76) | 14 Shots 3 7 On Target 0 59% Possession 41% 0 Yellow Cards 3 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Eliot Richards (Newport)  After our second straight defeat thanks to Newport County (not that it was surprising or anything), we were hoping to take on and beat relegated threatened Southport, in a match that we were the favourites. Things started off beautifully when Phillips gave us the lead within 6 minutes, before Clare scored an own goal to make it 2-0 to us, before Phillips hit the bar in an attempt to make it 3-0. In the second half, Daly scrambled the ball over the line to make it 2-1 in an attempt to claw his side back into the game. However, Adcock made it 3-1 to kill off an attempt of a comeback late on. This victory caused us to go up to 16th. Wrexham won the Blue Square Premier on this day as well. Blue Square Premier – 07/04/12 Southport 1 – 3 Bath Daly (61) | Phillips (6), Clare og (44), Adcock (89) 8 Shots 7 3 On Target 2 44% Possession 56% 1 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Lee Phillips (Bath)  The next game was against the team that I started my managerial career against, Alfreton. We were considered the favourites against the side that were in 10th position. However Jarman gave the away side the lead, before Clayton made it 2-0 early in the second half. This result was expected, as I had put out a weaken side in order to rest some of my exhausted players for obvious reasons. A plus side was that I had given Andre Carvalho-Landell his debut for the club in a result that caused us to fall back down to 17th. Blue Square Premier – 09/04/12 Bath 0 – 2 Alfreton | Jarman (11), Clayton (49) 9 Shots 5 1 On Target 4 55% Possession 45% 2 Yellow Cards 2 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Stephen Brogan (Alfreton)  Before this game had started, we were actually considered the slight favourites in what would be a tight game. I changed the line-up back to my strongest one and I was promptly rewarded when Watkins scored the opening the goal in the 11th minute to make it 1-0. Atkins soon followed up to make it 2-0, leaving me feeling somewhat surprised by the fact that we were leading the game at all. In the second half, we didn’t have much of the possession, but Cook ended up making it 3-0 right before the final whistle with a great goal. With this victory, we moved up to 16th, while Soutport and Ebbsfleet finally got relegated. Blue Square Premier – 14/04/12 Braintree 0 – 3 Bath | Watkins (11), Atkins (18), Cook (90+3) 9 Shots 5 2 On Target 3 44% Possession 56% 3 Yellow Cards 1 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Jamie Cook (Bath)  Our last match of the season, we were not considered the favourites, but when you consider the fact that we were against the side that we had lost to and were looking for a last gasp attempt for a playoff place, it was perfectly understandable. In the first half, we actually had the better part of the possession, much to my surprise, but in a game that was sadly pretty dull, this ended up being a bore draw for my last game of the season. We dropped down to 17th position once more, but overall, we were happy with the result. Unfortunately for Hayes and Yeading, they got relegated on the last game of the season, to join Tamworth, Southport and Ebbsfleet for the trip back down the league system. Blue Square Premier – 21/04/12 Bath 0 – 0 Mansfield | 10 Shots 9 2 On Target 1 53% Possession 47% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Jeff Henderson (Mansfield) Bath – 17th |46|17|9|20|50|58|-8|60| Champions – Wrexham – 95pts Playoffs 2nd – Fleetwood – 87pts 3rd – York – 86pts 4th – Luton – 78pts 5th – Newport – 77pts Relegated 21st – Hayes and Yeading – name too long 22nd – Ebbsfleet – beat us ... 5-0 23rd – Southport – beat them twice 24th – Tamworth – Conceded 103 goals!! Just 2 days into May, I got an offer from Bath to renew my contract. Bath City chairman Manda Rigby has offered you a new one year contract on £650 per week. It was just the same contract, only so I could extend my stay until the end of 2013. Now the things was, did I want to accept this offer straight away, or did I want to delay the offer for a while, so I could see if anyone else wanted my services for 1 week, before deciding my future? Note - I will be posting up the playoffs scores, because I know that some people will be interested, as well as who got promoted to the Blue Square Premier and relegated to the 5th tier of football as well.
