25 and Still Jobless – December Results
After my 26th Birthday, which was on the 4th of December, I was hoping to make it 3 wins out of 3 against Braintree, a side who are currently fighting for a place in the playoffs.
In the first half, we had more of the possession, I admit that, hell, we actually had more of the possession for the entire game, again. But in the first half, we had more of the shots, but we just weren’t putting them away, and in the end that cost us, dearly. Braintree, who had been on the back foot for most of the first half, suddenly got a goal thanks to Harry Rubbins, who scored an effort from outside of the semi circle outside of our area, the shot found its way into the bottom corner of the next. Things didn’t improve for us, in fact, thanks to their goal in the first half, Braintree’s confidence had gone up and was attacking more and soon, Sean Marks, who was making his 125th career league appearance, made it 2-0, after chesting down a cross from the man of the match, Ryan Peters. To be fair, Braintree had been doing better this season than us by miles, but still, it hurt to lose my first game in charge of Bath City, especially at home at Twerton Park.
Blue Square Premier – 7/12/11 Bath 0 – 2 Braintree | Rubbins (38), Marks (66) 8 Shots 9 2 On Target 5 54% Possession 46% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Ryan Peters (Braintree)
Not too long ago, we had been part of the F.A. Trophy Draw, something to which I looked forward to, I must admit. Our opponents were none other than Havant & Waterlooville, the side that not too long ago, famously went 2-0 up at Anfield, only to lose later on in the 4th round of the F. A. Cup. We needed to get a good start, which we got after taking possession almost straight away and much to my delight, we took the lead on a snowy day when Alex Russell, played in a ball for Jamie Cook to slot him comfortably. It was soon 2-0 when Alex Russell was provided a goal thanks to a Scott Murray corner. We went two 2-0 up at the break. Scott Murray then got in on the act, when Jamie Cook, sliced the defence in half thanks to his pass, providing an easy finish for Scott Murray to make the score 3-0 to us. There was a goal back in the end, when Mark Nwokeji ended up getting through the defence, only to somehow get the ball past our goalkeeper, something I think should have been saved. But regardless, we progressed to the next round, and I couldn’t have been happier.
F.A Trophy – 10/12/11 Bath 3 – 1 Havant & W Cook (13), Russell (32), Murray (61) | Nwokeji (87) 13 Shots 7 6 On Target 3 52% Possession 48% 1 Yellow Cards 2 0 Red Card 0 MoM – Alex Russell (Bath)
Our next opponents Mansfield were massively considered the favourites for this match, so I told the team to not go for their usual controlling game, but to go for the Countering game, because we really needed to defend here if we wanted just to get anything out of this game at all. This was made even more pressurising when your opponents are for the 4th season running trying to fight for promotion because they couldn’t do it in the previous years. But despite the fact that Mansfield had most of the chances, the first half was actually goalless, which pleased me, though it might have had something to do with how good we were at keeping possession. However, unfortunately enough, Mansfield did take the lead in the second half, thanks to a Matt Green goal, thanks to a through ball from Shaun Jeffers that took most of my defenders out of the game, something which I knew was coming. However, the goal did have a suspicion of offside involved, though I didn’t want to comment on it after the match. We didn’t go down without a fight however, hitting the woodwork at least twice, while Mansfield hit the woodwork once. But despite turning the match into a downright battle, we still lost 1-0, making it 2 defeats in a row in the league.
Blue Square Premier – 13/12/11 Mansfield 1 – 0 Bath Green (61) | 12 Shots 7 6 On Target 3 42% Possession 58% 2 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Tom Naylor (Mansfield)
Our next opponents were to be the recently relegated Stockport County, the only side in recent years to finish bottom of two divisions in a row with successive relegations. Not exactly an honour I would want wrapped around my neck, like a collar. However with Stockport being in 5th and Bath having slipped back into the relegations zones, now in 22nd, things were not looking like it was going to be a pleasant game for Bath, as they desperately wanted to avoid a 3rd straight league defeat, this time at the hands of Stockport, who were considered one of the main contenders for promotion. We started off being the better team, which surprised me. We had the bar twice in the first 10 minutes and had seen a shot cleared off of the line once, before we hit the bar again before we took the lead thanks to Scott Murray, after we had been taking barrages of attacks from Stockport County. After the break, Lee Phillips made it 2-0 after Jamie Cook had hit the bar beforehand. However, Stockport didn’t go down without a fight and Michael Paton made sure that it would be a nervy finish when he pulled a goal back. Thankfully for me and the fans it wasn’t enough to stop 22nd place Bath from beating 5th place Stockport. Random fact, we actually hit the woodwork 5 times in this match.
Blue Square Premier – 21/12/11 Stockport 1 – 2 Bath Paton (71) | Murray (39), Phillips (54) 10 Shots 13 6 On Target 6 49% Possession 51% 0 Yellow Cards 0 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Scott Murray (Bath)
I decided to try and sign a goalkeeping coach known as Trevor Porter, only for the backroom staff to block off my attempts, feeling that we already had enough staff at the club, much to my annoyance. I ended up going back to my parent’s for the day to celebrate Christmas with them. I had however, never felt so good or cheerful at Christmas before, maybe it was due to the great result we had against Stockport or something, I don’t know. However, I needed to leave early because of the fact we had a game on Boxing Day, I was excused because of my job. As well as the fact I had a game against Kettering Town the next day, up north.
The game against Kettering was said to be a really tight one, with a draw on the cards, something that suited me just fine, especially the team had drawn the game before I became Bath’s manager. However, it was Kettering who had taken the lead at first thanks to Moses Ashikodi who had been played in by Dan Gray, much to my annoyance, hell. They even hit the woodwork as well. However, Mark Preece headed it in from an Alex Russell corner to make it 1-1 just before halftime. In the second half, Jamie Cook had hit the post, twice from easy efforts, only to score his first league for the club goal in the 89th minute, much to my joy, as it proved to be the winner. The second win in a row took us out of the relegation zone once more.
Blue Square Premier – 26/12/11 Kettering 1 – 2 Bath Ashikodi (12) | Preece (45), Cook (89) 10 Shots 15 3 On Target 3 46% Possession 54% 1 Yellow Card 1 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Mark Preece (Bath)
Before the next game, we were able to get a Parent club in the form of Watford, so this would prove to be something that should hopefully benefit to us in the long term.
The next game was an important one. A game that I felt would be for sure our 3rd victory in a row. It was against Forest Green Rovers, our rivals. This was the last game of the month, and I remember clearly saying to my family over the phone that I was expecting to see my 3rd straight win for the first time as Bath City manager. Even the media were predicting that we would win this match, so to say that I was confident was an understatement.
I was cocky.
This cockiness cost me the match, big time.
I made an amateur mistake of getting too confident in the result coming our way, normally, I just never know what to expect, or expect to lose, but this time I expected a win, and I ended up witnessing my side being dominated, for most of the second half of the match. They hit the woodwork, we hit the woodwork. It was a goalless first half, a boring one too I must admit so I really didn’t see it coming. They hit the woodwork twice and scored thanks to Reece Styche, I felt shocked. I was losing to a rival club. Then we were dominated throughout the rest of the match, we had chances yes, but we deserved to lose the match and I will be the first to admit that we should have lost by more than 1 goal. There was also the fact that the match had been played on a Friday, the only one in fact, but thankfully we didn’t fall into the bottom 4 again, for now at least anyway.
Blue Square Premier – 30/12/11 Bath 0 – 1 Forest Green | Styche (52) 9 Shots 17 3 On Target 6 49% Possession 51% 0 Yellow Cards 1 0 Red Cards 0 MoM – Jared Hodgkiss (c) (Forest Green)

2 points above 21st team Lincoln having played a game more and 3 points behind Forest Green having played the same amount of games.
Note: Can't bring up a table, and just feel too lazy to do so myself. Hope you liked the update though. Only hoping that I didn't put in too much.
