Don't know why you would mock people over their choice of controls, though.

Before we all get carried away, the mocking thing was more a consideration that L button camera is a newbie thing to do and it was amongst the mhfu neoseeker community where I picked it up from and was to do with the exact claw that Natanhiel described. It is the opinion of a lot of players I know that the L button for complete camera management was clunky and lead to disjointed views.

The thing is that the PSP, vita and PS2 controllers have the thumbstick at the bottom and the d-button above which allows those players willing to push through the RSI to have a completely fluid permanent camera control.

The problem is that on 3DS and I think on the Wii u controllers this is reversed making the 'CLAW' imo impossible to use.

So I have to get used to using the touchscreen to control the camera.

BUT I cannot figure out a way to control the camera while simultaneously pressing the face buttons

btw i'm not for one second suggesting that the control options on any platforms are better. I'm commenting on the fact that I am having trouble getting used to the switch and looking for any one else who shares my issues...

There is an alternative to the touch screen camera. It's the 3DS circle pad pro add-on which basically gives you an additional analog stick for the camera. The controls are very similar to how it worked on the classic controller pro for the wii, and coming from that experience I can tell you that you might not even have to use the L trigger to center the camera on the monster. In fact I didn't even know it existed when I played through Tri.

Most people do enjoy the feeling of having something exclusive to them, but not so much the companies that market that some thing. Capcom wants the series to be a little more accessible to those who haven't been fortunate enough to play a monster hunter game (to boost sells here in the west) while still keeping to the feel of monster hunter. If the camera controls are detrimental, and let's be honest they really shouldn't be, to your initial experience, you may loose interest and never come back. You shouldn't have to fight the camera or run the risk of carpal tunnels just to play a game.

This is the reason that Capcom has made changes to the control scheme, and it works in my opinion. You never see camera help threads in Tri's forum

Having put some time into TriG and the Ultimate demo after playing MH since the original, Focus Sight and touch pad >>>>> Claw.

The claw isn't some kind of perfection in control, it's a workaround to a sub-optimal button layout for the series and I don't understand why some people would think that capcom would have it in mind when moving the series to other platforms. Focus sight aside you can set the entire right half of the touch screen to the camera controls that reacts surprisingly well and the placements feels a lot like a right stick. If you're so into the claw feel you can just move the camera pad to the left side of the touch screen.

Lastly, if there's any company you want to be upset with for Capcom moving MH off of playstation, it's Sony. They never did anything to make the psp safer from piracy out of japan and they wouldn't do the required updates for AdHoc Party which resulted in the cancellation P3rdHD in the west.

my initial reaction to this was stop being a baby and enjoy the game but having tried the demo today i'm in total agreement! I found the touchscreen option to be usable against Lagombi but not ideal. The more I played the better it felt but its definitely not as easy to control as the psp. That said I found the 3ds control mechanism to be really bad against the plessy when underwater. Its almost like the camera controls are another enemy to overcome.

I am making the move to 3ds just like the OP and like many psp players who have been craving translated portable monster hunter action. This exact same discussion is being had on another site and amongst a lot of psp MHFU fans right now. The reality is that most english psp players never played MH after mhfu. I did on Tri and found that using the classic controller I was able to use the claw but could never get used to the second analogue stick.

The camera has always been a problem in mh that the player has to overcome and its no diffferent now. But i do see the point about charge weapons like bow. you have to be able to track the monster while charging and if your finger is on the charge button then you can't also be on the camera controls. my mates and I then realised that the best way to do it is THE REVERSE CLAW using the right hand!!! OMFG

either way its definitely a problem that i'm looking forward to overcoming!

What is Focus Sight?

Focus Sight is this little tab on the touchpad you hit which changes what L does, when it's turned on pressing L makes you look at whatever boss monster you have selected instead of recentering the camera. Especially useful underwater.

It's worth noting that this is NOT a constant lock-on and you can't spam L to make it work as such since double-tapping L while Focus is on recenters the camera as normal.
