Dragon Quest X, an MMO released for the Wii and soon to be launched Wii U, has sold 420,000 copies in its first week of sales. Rather a lot, until you consider that Dragon Quest IX and Dragon Quest VIII sold 2,353,440 and 2,237,000 copies respectively -- across 2 days rather than Dragon Quest X's four. Nonetheless, the title is being held as extremely successful and could likely be the franchise's most profitable title to date.

Much as was the case for Final Fantasy XI, initial copies sold tend to be significantly less than single-player titles. In 2003, the title launched with around 200-300 thousand subscriptions, then built into around 500,000 in the next year, and held that well into 2010. Final Fantasy XI is noted as being by far the most profitable title in the franchise. Dragon Quest X's numbers, by comparison, are extraordinary considering its single territory release. Square Enix is likely very pleased.

Dragon Quest X will be releasing, tentatively, on the Wii U later this year -- exclusively for Japan, of course -- and the only version currently available is the Wii one. Square Enix has yet to announce any localization efforts. If the release is akin to Final Fantasy XI, it could be between a year or two before being ported westwards. Too bad for us, and too bad for them!
