Blessed art those MMO players who wander off the beaten PvE path and instead choose the path of blood. Those who frown at the challenge afforded by wild beasts and criminals and instead choose the skilled blade of a brave gladiator well met in the arena. WildStar welcomes ye, ye damned PvPers. Watch the latest DevSpeak on Arenas and Battlegrounds and know that Nexus is waiting.
Yes, Carbine Studios' latest DevSpeak trailer, where devs give players an up-front introduction to the systems and features that make up WildStar, is on the MMOs instanced PvP systems Arenas and Battlegrounds. Battlegrounds open up at level 6 and offer 10v10 interesting takes on the capture the flag and capture point game modes. Arenas open up at level 30 and offer direct 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 battles to the death. These open PvP modes feature level and gear equalization features to ensure even matches.
At level 50, well, that's when the fun really begins. At 50 ranked modes of both Arenas and Battlegrounds open up featuring an ELO-based rating system. That is to say, a rating attached to a team based on who they've won and lost against and used to match them against similarly skilled opponents. Also, that means there will be leadersboards for players to gage and measure their opponents with.
Both open and ranked Battlegrounds and Arenas will award "Prestige" which can be spent as a currency to buy PvP-based gear. Yes, PvP gear will feature stats that only work in PvP. Ranked mode will afford players rank-specific loot as well, however, making it the way to go for players who love the PvP bling.
WildStar is planned for release on June 3, exclusively on PC. Preorders just opened up, letting players get a 3-day headstart on non-preorderers, as well as providing access to four closed beta weekends leading up to open beta -- the first of which is this weekend. See you on the battlefield, though by then you may very well already be dead.
