Gearbox's Borderlands series has a unique visual style with its cel-shaded graphics and bold lines. It resembles a cartoon really, and soon it'll have the chance to actually be one, as 2K Games and Gearbox have announced a partnership with the Academy of Art University to allow students create an animated short in the Borderlands universe. The film is expected to debut later this year.
Students from all disciplines at the Academy of Art University will have a chance to participate in the Borderlands Cooperative project and create a short film. University professors will guide their students along in the process, with 2K and Gearbox providing resources to get the ball rolling. Throughout the spring semester, the students form teams and have to create a variety of stories set within the Borderlands universe. A panel composed of university, 2K, and Gearbox judges will then pick one team to interview for an internship at Gearbox.
Once at the studio, the students can then begin full production on their short film. Production is expected to begin this summer with the debut in the fall. This project is designed to provide real-world experience of working as a team and under a deadline, with some hopefully fantastic results to show for it.
