I'll be honest, I don't see why this is bugging people so much. I guess being afraid of a bricking, but Nintendo has had a reputation of long-lived hardware and working with customers to get their stuff back, at least on Wii. Either way, it seems like this is getting blown way out of proportion to me.

Today's gamer community is all about online interactivity and portability. Look at my xbox, say I want to play a game over at a friends house on my profile with my save. I can easily do that with features they supply for the console. I haven't touched the ps3, but I assume they have something that does the same. It is the thought of my profile being locked away at my console at home, it bugs me. With the competition doing things that allow for portability, it seems foolish to NOT allow it. Simple as that, it's an ease of access thing.

Why Future? Why not now? What possible reason do they have for locking it to one?

bbb7002004 oni_hero On my PS3, not only can I sign into my profile at my friend's house, I can also redownload any games/DLC I bought. So if I break my PS3, I don't lose my PSN games. And if you have PS Plus, you don't lose your save data either, since Plus members get cloud storage.

And the reason it's "bugging people" so much is that it was industry standard about 5 years ago.

Doesn't matter really if you can't log onto it or not. You'd have to create a new Mii on the console your trying to use anyways, and if I'm not mistaken N.N IDs are saved with Miis on the console.
Sense Nintendo Network will be cross platform, you will most likely not completely lose your DLC/bought items on the eShop. Soon the eShop will be accessible on a PC or Smartphone, which probably means that downloaded features will be totally lost. I don't have a Wii-U yet, but I'm almost positive when you first boot up a Wii-U it asks you to create a N.N account, but I'm not sure if it asks you to 'sign in' to Nintendo Network. But again, you will later be able to access NN via PC or smartphone, which could mean REGISTERING on the app/ website. If you register on the pc/smartphone, will you be able to 'sign in' on Wii-U when you first start it? We will probably see down the road, remember people this just came out, nothing that is at launch is usually permanent.

I understand completely, when comparing the three companies, which is why I said companies(in general) and used our smartphones as an example. I agree completely that Sony and Microsoft halfass their content far too often, but Nintendo has to realize that time is of the essence with such a profound feature. Years ago I wouldn't have though this was a big deal, but I now know plenty of people who use their PSN IDs or Gamertags on multiple consoles. The smartest solution Nintendo would have used would have been to force people to create a Club Nintendo account, like Google does with GMail on Android, and use that for their Nintendo Network ID. Club Nintendo is already in place and can be accessed on any internet enabled device. So to implement that onto Wii U and their online network by adding the robust features of friend lists and the likes would have been a very smart thing. That's my opinion at least.
