That is the monster hutner realism and since you picked a lance class the slowest of them all, basically iirc dual swords>Sword and Shield>Great Sword=Switch Axe=Long Sword=Hammer.

Also keep in mind you can use dodge to cancel the drawing animation, this tactic is often used on Mhtri and other Mh games to cancel many animations, advanced players rely on dodging roars by literally exploiting a half frame second chance to roll when a monster is well roaring.

You must've used the combo, lances use combos of sorts to attack so you will spend a lot of time dodging until you can get a hit in, Dark Arcanine was a lancer iirc.

Monster hunter Long sword rely on short combos that you dodge cancel to build spirit bar, when it's full you unleash a big spirit combo that hits for nice damage and is quick, to boot you can connect a special extra hit that will up your bar a level, as the bar changes color the damage goes up.

You picked "Advanced" classes, usually People are better off starting with the Great sword or the Sword and shield, Great Sword is slow however it has a draw attack that people use in a battoujutsu set, it's basically gemming in critical + skill and punishdraw if you can to quickly score hits and dimisnish monsters HP.

Also Monster Hunter is NOT an easy game, it has a learning curve, you need to slowly memorize patterns, i've spend 2+ hours trying to solo some monsters on tri given that you need to plan when you attack and exploit the tiniest hole.

Like Duncan Idaho said, it brings a bit of realism to the table and I would also argue, some strategy. It'd be a bit ridiculous if one's character had super speed and was as agile and strong as the monster they're hunting. One has to time their attacks, dodge/roll when it is necessary to move out of harm's way, and sheath their weapon when it'd be more advantageous to quickly move and attack again from a more apt position. Monster Hunter is not about being able to run around fast and hitting hard non-stop until whatever it is finally snuffs it. This is part of the rather large learning curve that I encountered in Monster Hunter Tri, and is something improved upon with a lot of practice.

I played Monster Hunter Tri so much that the only weapons I didn't use regularly were the Sword and Shield and the Bowgun (even then, I started trying to use the Bowgun more before I stopped playing Monster Hunter Tri often). With the lance you can chain attacks and pull a load off if you do it right. So say you're a little distance away, you can be running toward the monster and unsheathe into a forward stab, before doing a couple of upward stabs. One could follow this with a counter if they wanted, assuming the monster is about to attack them, allowing them to shield against the incoming blow and attack again. Alternatively, the hunter can dodge to the side and then immediately be able to stab the monster a couple more times. I like to run an Evade-centred set when I use a Lance so this method of attacking, following the initial strike with a dodge and then some more attacks before hopefully repeating, is my preferred way of doing things.

There are a couple of attacks one can do with the Long Sword, and one has to learn how to best combo these together. Once the Spirit Gauge in the top corner is filled from these attacks, it is the opportune moment to try using a Spirit Attack. Using the Spirit Attack is great - for example, it won't bounce - and having filled up the Spirit Gauge increases attack power. To draw upon the point about Lances again in tandem with what I've just said, one really needs to know how a weapon works before they can realise its full potential.

This captures the nature of the series pretty well; I've found it's not so simple as going on a couple of quests and immediately picking up on how to play the game effectively. One will find over time, for the sake of such things as crafting weapons and armours, that one will hunt the same monster many, many times over. After this time, one will become used to all the attack patterns of a monster, the signs of when it's weak or in rage mode, and the best times to launch attacks of one's own.

The mission was 20 long and it gave you a cookie cutter character with no other weapons, and the enemies didn't drop anything; after that 15 minutes it just failed me, through three separate "mission failed" screens, then two "thanks for playing" screens.

As far as my experience goes, the average quest will have a total time of 50 minutes - obviously this is different with the demo. The choices of characters is to simplify things: it takes a long time to gather the materials and have the money to be able to craft armour and weapons - said materials being acquirable both from gathering and/or hunting depending on what one is making. Even in the main game, you can only take one armour set and one weapon out on a quest - in other words, you can't bring a spare change of armour with you or an alternate weapon(s).

Once one has practiced enough, they'll be able to play quite fluidly with their character. Practice and strategy are highly significant.

It seems like everything else in the game is normal "video game character speed" except the protagonist, as well as employing the standard video game unbelievabilities and impossibilities. Yes, the character's weight does seem like he's trying to lift something he shouldn't be able to and aim it, which lends its share of disabilities in movement and maneuverability. A monster should be dead after having a pointed tree-trunk jammed into them after only a few minutes, not 2 hours. Your head should be sheared clean off rather than simply falling down and having your shared health pool depleted slightly. Overall, it is not a realistic game. It is a regular video game where you've been made slowly.

Also I'm pretty sure there was only one attack for the weapons I tried, but I could locate a guise or button map, so it's possible it was some combination that wasn't logical. I'll stop disturbing you all with this though; you've been far more patient with me than I've been with the game, and it speaks well to your characters that I wasn't just slapped down for mouthing off about it.

Except that monster have scales and tough hides so the main point is trying *to* weaken it little by little, tbh if you are complaining atm i dont want yo see you going againts deviljho, a monster that forces you to put on practice everything you've learnt and even then it can rape you in the blink of an eye.

The upwards chop and the side chops are all avaible attacks for LS, on your third and last attack (foward chop, side chop, upwards chop) you need to press the dodge button (it should be the b button unless capcom rehauled the whole stuff i dont have a WiiU but nintendo should've left the a, b, x, y buttons there) this will cancel the recovery animation and will allow you to quickly get onto a new attack, before i lost practice i used to run with a great sword and i abused that, great sword has three attacks too (well four, if you cant unsheating and slamming in the weapon to the monster), a stab, a side dash and a "slap" i often chained this moves then as soon as the slap connected i rolled out of the way, here is the main other issue it takes time and patience to learn the pros and cons of your class.

The main selling point of Mh is that forces you to be smart with your weapons, this is not Devil May cry where the MC swings a huge sword like it was a wooden stick, Great swords, hammers, lances, and switch axes are considered "heavy" weapons so they impar your movment, Long swords are "Medium" weigth, finally dual swords, sword and shield and similar are "ligth weigth" so they allow a character to move faster.

I am too! I actually liked that game quite a lot but I had it on the 360 so I had to sell it when it red ringed a few years back. Never got it for PS3. D:

Wow, not going down the page and reading all of that.

So anyway, I've ordered a ton of games for next month, just what I need! Monster Hunter on Wii U, Etrian Odyssey, Soul Hackers, Luigi's Mansion, and Pandora's tower. Just looking at my backlog hurts, I'm 35 hours into Fire Emblem and only at chapter 17 (maybe halfway in the main story?), 75 hours into Xenoblade with quite a bit more to go there as well, plus I still have Darksiders II, Virtue's Last Reward, Layton 5, and Paper Mario start.

Anyone else trying to play down their backlog?
