Well, the test that Twilight set up wasn't conclusive at all. What if the real Pinkie got distracted by a clone saying "Hey, look what I can do!" to her?

I dunno. Twilight can be naive, but the one Pinkie that's acting differently to all the others should be glaringly obvious.

My thoughts exactly. Bad test was bad. Not to mention Twilight being a bit too quick on the trigger there. She should have only zapped the Pinkies that stopped watching the wall on their own.

He pretty much immediately goes to find (retrieve?) the hidden book. Did he know where to find it? It's also odd that he does not mention anything about the secret compartment to twilight, like... maybe he's got some use for it later?

He's also, without making it glaringly obvious, rail-roading the plot like a skilled game master (the one designing the story) in a role playing game would. Hint that it's no problem finding the real one. And to stick with the RPG terminology when the "player" (Twilight) doesn't do what she's supposed to (Speak with the sad Pinkie) he steps in and takes action, but also manages to get the plot going without actually getting any credit for it. Like a background support character played only too good. :-)

I'm calling it now: 3 - the season spike starts to rock by saving the day when nopony else can. :P

I will say that I was deeply surprised that Spike never mentioned a word about the secret compartment. If it was just stuffed behind some books out of plain sight I'd excuse it, but a secret compartment? Damnit, that's news!

I suppose... and of course she is already dealing with the Pinkie Problem. No need to distract Twilight from saving Ponyville (and by extension, the real Pinkie) with a silly secret compartment.

Although I will not shake the feeling that this really should have been a bigger deal, lest it have just been written differently. Secret compartments usually mean something is well-knit into a plotline. (Where did the comartment come from? What was in it? Why was it hidden? What is the meaning of the switch? etc) Nope, this was just a throwaway ploy to make the book seem more mysterious than it actually was.

Well, who knows? It might turn out to be some kind of chekhov's gun in a later episode. Did we see inside the compartment? I don't remember.

The book was inside it, so yeah.

It was a bit cobwebbed as I recall. There wasn't anything else in the compartment in any case. There might be more secret compartments though.

But seriously, rather convenient that Spike happened to find the secret compartment which just so happened to have the appropriate book in it >_>
